Remove “Uncategorized” under posts
-
I want to use only tags and not categories. How do I remove the default “uncategorized” category under my posts, so that only tags are displayed? Is this even possible?

Posts, as far as I know, have to have at least one category and if you do not assign one, they will always end up in uncategorized. You should be able to rename that category to something that you would like better.

No, I definitely see a handful of WP.com sites that only display tags and not categories…

Here are a couple. As you can see, many posts have only tags displayed, without the “uncategorized” showing. Roll over the tags and you will see that they are indeed “tags” and not categories:

On the first link you provided, the top post is categorized as “health” the second as entertainment, and the third as family and travel with tags of hawaii and tourism. In fact all of the posts on the first page have categories assigned (the little stacked squares are the symbol on that theme for categories.
WordPress is a little strange. The categories shown above or below a post if you hover your mouse over them will indicate they are going to “tag” pages. Those are global “tag” pages and both tags and categories listed on the actual post will lead to the same global “tag” pages. In the sidebar, the tags and categories will take you to your local tags and categories pages on your blog (http://yourblog.wordpress.com/tag… or /category…).
On the individual posts, the categories and tags both lead you to http://wordpress.com/tag/whateverthetagorcategoryisthatyouclickon.
WordPress made for a very confusing thing here with the global and local tags and categories and local tags and categories, and the subject is a sore point with a lot of us bloggers here and has resulted in some very long threads on the subject.

Here is a reference for you from the FAQ’s: http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/09/21/the-difference-between-tags-and-categories/

Wow, more confusing than expected, but you answered all my future questions as well. Thanks for the help.

Well, wordpress makes it hard to explain because globally, tags and categories are the same thing, but locally (on your blog) they are separate. Don’t be surprised it this brings a lot more comments out from the others out there that have a big problem with how they have done it.
You are welcome, and happy blogging.
