The WordPress.com section of your URL will be removed if you choose a custom domain that comes for free as a part of the of the $4/month plan. The pricing page confirms this: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
When you purchase this plan, and get a custom domain name for free with this plan, you will have the option to set your new custom domain as the primary domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#setting-the-primary-domain
When this is done, all WordPress.com links in your site will change to your custom domain.
I hope this helps clarify things. Feel free to get back if you have questions related to WordPress.com account and WordPress.com sites and I will be keen on helping you through it!
