Removing a sidebar
-
Hello! I’m using the Fjords04 theme, and it uses a content bar with three sidebars. I would like to combine the main content bar with the first sidebar, or rather, delete the first sidebar and expand the content bar to take up the space of both.
The description in the CSS page says that “You can not edit the stylesheets of your theme,” and I’m not sure if that means what I want isn’t possible. I know how to expand the content bar in CSS, I think (thank you, thesacredpath), but what I don’t know is how to delete the first sidebar.
I’ve removed the widgets I had in that sidebar and put in a blank text widget to keep the default widget set out.
Thank you!

You will not be able to do this. It’s not even possible with the paid CSS upgrade to eliminate sidebars, although if you really know what you’re doing you MAY be able to for instance move the far-right one so far over it’s off the monitor.

Actually, is there a theme that is similar to Fjords04 with fewer sidebars? That might be the easiest path!

Thank you raincoaster, I was worried that was the case. I don’t think I have that kind of skill.

“If you purchase the Custom CSS Upgrade you can modify the stylesheet of any theme.” However, you cannot edit the underlying template as we are all working on a multi-user blogging platform. That means that if we could edit the php or HTML in the template all other blogs with the same theme would be identically affected.
If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade, which will allow you to stylize the themes here, but it does not allow you to change the functionality.
Please read this entry for more clarity http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/
As there is no official support for the CSS upgrade, do not buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of CSS. Before buying the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > edit CSS and wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try out changes before you buy the upgrade.
