Ads have been appearing on WordPress.COM sites since 2006.
Unless you purchase a Personal plan http://wordpress.com/pricing or a higher level Premium or Business Plan there will be ads placed by WordPress.COM on your site.
If the ads you see are found at the end of blog posts then provided you see this small About These Ads link then what you are seeing is WordPress.com generated advertising. http://en.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/

I cannot see what you refer to. Will you please provide an example for Staff?
Screenshots can be very helpful. You can use http://snag.gy/ or http://cloudup.com to share screenshots and link to them here. If you use the WordPress.com guide for screenshots http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ you can and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

Hi,
I uploaded a ppt file in my media library, title ‘Advertisements’, so that you can have a look. Site is https://mdwortlab.wordpress.com/
Thanks -
The ads that I see are expected on a free site, like yours. There’s 1 placement under the page content and another in the footer with the widgets.
