removing ads but retaining my existing wordpress.com address
-
I do not seem to be able to keep my existing wordpress.com free blog site when I pay for a private upgrade to remove ads. Is there a way to do this please?
-
I should clarify, it’s the existing, 10 year-use, free site address I want to, for simplicity…

Hi there, adding a custom domain name to your upgraded WordPress.com site is optional. You can stay with your current “mysite.wordpress.com” address as long as you’d like.
Hope that helps clarify, but post back here if you have any other question about this.

THanks Jennifer, but where on the present free site can I just do the no-ads upgrade to ‘personal’?? I get channelled into retaining my own domain, and it doesnt let me just put in the free wordpress one… but will suggest another free one!
thanks -
Hi there, the individual “no-ads” upgrade was retired some years ago; if you let that grandfathered upgrade lapse, it will now require a paid plan like Personal.
Let me tag this for Staff because perhaps there has been a change in the upgrade flow that I’m not aware of, but you definitely do not need to register a custom domain. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

We run ads on free sites to keep them free: https://wordpress.com/support/no-ads/
If you see an offensive ad, please do report it via the “Report This Ad” link below the ad, or by submitting the form at https://wordpress.com/support/about-these-ads/
To remove ads, simply purchase any paid plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Each paid plan comes with a free custom domain, but there is no obligation to use it.

I appreciate your help… but you are not addressing the issue.
I have historiclandscapes.wordpress.com I wish to get ad-free now and am happy to pay for the upgrade.
If I enter this into the search, it obviously comes up as taken – there is seemingly no route for existing sites to upgrade.
Likewise, it is not ‘my’ domain to link to, as it’s “just” a free wordpress address.
What is your suggestion please, Manxman, in such a case?
TIA

You do need to register a custom domain as part of the process, since it is included with the plan, but you don’t need to set it as the primary address: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#set-a-primary-address

No, you don’t.
I’ve just found that if you
- go through the user account
, you get opportunity to upgrade simply.
