I list my categories in my right column, but they are also showing up below the headling to my post (Feral Dog Blog). How can I remove those categories so it looks better?

Here is how you should write a link to your blog whenever you ask questions in the forum: http://feraldog.wordpress.com/
Volunteers don’t like to waste time searching and guessing about that, and usually we need to see the site.Connections displays the global tags at the top of posts. Some themes show them at the bottom, and in a few you can hide them. That is built in to the theme so unless you use one of the new themes where they can be hidden you would need knowledge of CSS and pay for the upgrade.
By the way, you should limit the number of categories and/or tags to about 10 or 12 to avoid being seen as a spammer by wordpress: you want to be included in global tags so folks can find your site.
