Removing date from an article's URL? — please.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi.
    I’m a beginner just starting a blog.

I really, really don’t like URL’s that include numbers (the date). I would gladly post only pages: I see those can have clean URL’s, without a date.

BUT… I want my navigation menu to contain ONLY CATEGORIES. From what I’ve seen, it’s not possible to add pages to menu categories. Only articles can be added to a menu category.

… so, if I’m forced to stick to articles, how do I get rid of those awkward, annoying numbers in the URL?

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Aloha outerspacevisitor, You are not able to remove the date from URLs on WordPress.com sites; you would need to use a self-hosted WordPress.org site in order to do that.

More about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

You can create a custom menu and and only categories to it. This page describes how to do this:

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Hello, Geoffrey.
    Thanks for replying.

I see!… Well, in that case is there a way to add pages to a category in my navigation menu?

For example, the menu will look like this:

    HOME . ECONOMY . POLITICS . CONTACT

I want “Economy” to be a category: when clicked, I want it to display all pages from that category. That way I could work only with pages, and pages have no date in the URL.

If I cannot add pages to categories, then why? Maybe a WordPress admin sees this. Why?… It makes no sense.

Categories can only be assigned to posts. You could create the pages you wanted and then create a custom menu to display those in the order you wanted. This would allow you to use pages and have them under the correct categories, such as economy or politics.
