Removing domain mapping and adding a 301 redirect

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Guys,

My domain mapping expires in 2 months and I want to remove it. In order to keep traffic flowing I was going to put a 301 redirect in place to send it through to the default domain name given by wordpress.

The other spanner I’d like to throw into the works is I may want to change my free domain from markthinksdotnet.wordpress.com to a different free domain.

So in essence I would be wanting traffic to be redirected from markthinks.net to markthinksdotnet.wordpress.com or maybe even a different one.

I have been reading around on here and elsewhere online and I have been finding out how to do these things, but I have no idea in which sequence I should be doing them.

Please can someone advise me of what I should be doing and when I should be doing it.

    Thanks in advance.

    Mark

    Hi there,
Since you’ve mapped a domain, then your primary domain is set to https://markthinks.net/ and your secondary domain is set tomarkthinksdotnet.wordpress.com. If you choose to remove your primary domain, then you should make sure markthinksdotnet.wordpress.com is now set as the primary domain. To do this, go to https://wordpress.com/domains, select your site, click “Change primary”, and select markthinksdotnet.wordpress.com as your primary domain.

Without the domain mapping, users will need to access your site through your WordPress.com URL. As an option, you could buy “Site redirect” to make sure users who go into markthinks.net are directed to your WP URL. You still have to make sure your domain doesn’t expire (in your domain provider)
To change your WP URL, follow these steps:
Go to markthinksdotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin > My Blogs. Hover over the name of your blog and you’ll find the optin “Change Blog Address”

    I hope this information helps.

Thanks for your reply, that makes a little more sense now.

I am still confused to the order in which I do things if you could clarify? Let’s pretend I want to remove mapping, buy “site redirect” and change the name of my WP URL.

Maybe there isn’t a specific order?

Also do I need to leave the domain set up pointing to WP at my registrar once I have removed mapping?

    Hi there,
Once you remove mapping, even if you have your domain pointed at WP, it won’t work since the upgrade will be removed and your WP site will only recognize its WP URL.
    I’ve just went through: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/
and it seems I got also confused with site redirect. You can redirect WP sites to other domains. If you want your domain to direct to your WP site, then you’re good as you’re now with the Domain mapping.
Given this, I suggest you keep your domain mapping. If you decide to cancel, then you’ll loose the ability to point your domain to your WP site.
