Removing domain mapping via change to nameservers
-
Hi, we are currently migrating our website to a WordPress.org self-hosted site. The migration of the site and content has been successful and we are presently using the temporary domain provided by the host (with maintenance mode on).
As part of this process we need the domain presently mapped to the WordPress.com account to now be assigned to the new host. Our hosting provider and domain registrar are separate.
The WordPress.com documentation on the domain mapping service implies that changing the nameservers on the registrar end will stop the WordPress.com mapping. I just wanted to confirm that this is the only step necessary before proceeding with editing the nameservers with the registrar, which we will be changing per the hosting company’s instructions to now point there.
While I know any information with regards this process that goes beyond the mapping service provided by WordPress.com moves beyond the scope of this support forum, if there are additionally any tips for avoiding downtime in this process they would be appreciated.
Thank you

Good morning!
No problem. Yes, when you change the name servers the site will no longer display the WordPress.com version of your site. It will display whatever you’ve done with the new hosting provider.
Is the new site ready to launch? If not, I’d leave everything alone until the new site is ready, and then edit the name servers at that time.
Once you’ve changed the name servers, and the site is working, come back here and cancel your domain mapping and premium plan. You’ll no longer need it and that will prevent you from getting reminder emails about renewing it. We can do it for you or from https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/
