removing excerpt from post but not homepage
-
hi,
my custom excerpt is displaying under my post page right above the content and under the title, except i don’t really want it there and wish i could remove it. however, i can’t just remove the excerpt and leave the box empty since i do still use it for other things like my homepage.
theme: twenty sixteen.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I do not see a “posts page” set on mioscorner.com when I check on this end, so I am not sure that I was able to find this issue.
Can I see this on your homepage? Or is it a specific place I need to look at?
Thanks for pointing it out!

I’m not sure what you want to do exactly. From where do you want to hide/remove the excerpt? From the post itself or from the mail blog page?
-
i want to hide the excerpt from when you click on the post since it appears right under the title and above the actual content of the post. although leaving the excerpt box blank would solve the problem, i still need the excerpts in for my homepage which displays my latest posts with the excerpt as well.

Thanks for clarifying. It looks like that’s how Twenty Sixteen handles excerpts, so there’s no setting to modify that behavior without having access to the CSS editor, which is for Premium and higher plans.
However, since your excerpt is the first part of the post, is there a reason why you’re not allowing WordPress to auto-generate the excerpt for you? Since you already have Excerpts set in your Settings -> Discussion settings, the Twenty Sixteen theme should follow that and if Excerpt is empty, WordPress automatically creates an excerpt using the first 55 words of the post. That means the excerpt would show on your homepage, but not on the post itself.
If you’re wanting more granular control over those excerpts or want to use more or less words, you would need to upgrade to Premium in order to use CSS to hide the custom excerpt on your individual post pages. Let us know if you do so and we can advise what you need to use.
I hope that clarifies things!

helper-heroponriki,
Hi. It’s true that Twenty Sixteen handles custom excerpts differently than other themes that display them. A custom excerpt displays as a “post intro” on this theme, both in the single posts and on the blog and archive pages. The feature is described and illustrated in the “Post Intro” section of the Twenty Sixteen overview.
If there were a full posts/excerpt option at Content Options or elsewhere in Customize on Twenty Sixteen, then one might be able to prevent the “post intro” excerpt from displaying on single posts there. However, in my own tests I found no post excerpt setting at Customize on Twenty Sixteen.
Since you already have Excerpts set in your Settings -> Discussion settings, the Twenty Sixteen theme should follow that…
I’ve been unable to figure out what settings you’re referring to. The Discussion Settings page options involve only comment and email notifications, don’t they?Since @miturashidango’s homepage is displaying excerpts, I figured they must be using either Blog Posts Blocks in a static page on the homepage, customized to show excerpts, as described in the Post Control Settings section of the Blog Posts Block support page, or the More Block in each post if the homepage is set to display the latest posts.

Sorry, the following should have been in a block quote in my previous post, like so:
Since you already have Excerpts set in your Settings -> Discussion settings, the Twenty Sixteen theme should follow that…

Hi @musicdoc1
That is my understanding as well, so perhaps helper-heroponriki was crossing signals with another post they were helping on.
@miturashidango to underscore what’s been said here so far. When you leave a custom excerpt on a blog post, it is shown on the post page itself as well. This is by design (the preference of the theme author) so it can’t be turned off in the theme settings. You have two options you can consider to remove the excerpt from the post page:
- Leave the custom excerpt field blank. The theme will continue to make “auto-excerpts” that show on your homepage and cut off automatically at 55 words… if the site visitor clicks on the link to view the full post they will see just the full article, and no excerpt
- Upgrade to the Premium plan, which includes the ability to use CSS to tweak your theme. We can help you with the code you need to hide the excerpt on the full post page, so it only shows on the homepage
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

staff-totoro,
The theme will continue to make “auto-excerpts” that show on your homepage and cut off automatically at 55 words…
Hi. In my tests on Twenty Sixteen, I find that, with the homepage set to display the latest posts, it displays the full posts by default. And since there is no excerpt option at customize on Twenty Sixteen, I wonder how these “auto-excerpts” of 55 words that helper-heroponriki and you refer to would be created.
This is why I concluded above that
[@miturashidango] must be using either Blog Posts Blocks in a static page on the homepage, customized to show excerpts, as described in the Post Control Settings section of the Blog Posts Block support page, or the More Block in each post if the homepage is set to display the latest posts.

hi, thanks for all your replies !! i’ve decided to just leave it as it is since i don’t think it’s worth it at least for my site to be upgraded to premium just for that, but thank you for all your help! i really appreciate it!
