Removing free site?

    As an unpaid consultant, I’m trying to help a new local government agent address some issues with the branding of his municipality.

    The previous mayor had created some sites on wordpress.com that come up in search results, but now “does not know” how to access any of them. These are all sites stemming from the time he was mayor, and are just basic information sites.

    Obviously, I understand that the he doesn’t want to either be involved with the issue or really care one way or another.

    My question — is there a way, other than with the help of the original account holder, to remove or delete *.wordpress.com sites?

    @keithsmith010318,

    My question — is there a way, other than with the help of the original account holder, to remove or delete *.wordpress.com sites?

    Yes, once you upgrade to one of our WordPress.com plans (Personal, Premium, or Business), you’ll get a free domain credit, which then you’ll be able and get your own free domain without with WordPress.com subdomain.

    Let me know if you have any more questions with this going forward, and I’ll be happy to assist you.

    I do appreciate your response. However, I don’t think your response really addresses my question.

    We don’t want a WordPress subdomain. We’d like the one that’s currently there to be gone.

    We don’t want a free domain. We’d like the one that’s there (currently showing up in Google) to be gone.

    Again, is there a way, other than with the help of the original *wordpress* account holder to remove or delete *.wordpress.com sites?

    @keithsmith010318,

    I see. I am a bit confused as well. Can you send over your site address so that I can check and help further. Since I am not too sure of what you are asking, I’ll also go ahead and tag this as Modlook, so that staff could look over your request and help as well. In the meantime, as I mentioned, please send over your site address so that staff could check when they get here. Thanks!

    Sure. The website in question is at https://cityofbooneville.wordpress.com/.

    Our new mayor would like that address not to exist. Our old mayor, who created the site, claims he now doesn’t know anything about it.

    Presumably, if it is tied to an old email address that is in the city’s purview, however, we could reestablish that address and use that information to regain password information, access the account, and then remove it.

    WordPress.com sites are owned by the person who created them. You really need access to the email address used to create the account or the activation URL sent at that time to then be able to delete the site.

    @alissonwp says she has added the modlook tag but I don’t see it. If you wish to address your problem to a member of staff then add the word modlook in the tag box on the right and a staff member will hopefully respond in due course.

  • Hi there,

    As @alissonwp and @themagicrobot already said, to access that website’s WordPress.com account and subsequently delete it you need to provide a proof of ownership as detailed in this guide:

    Recover Your Account

    If you aren’t able to provide an email from the email address with which the blog was registered, a PayPal transaction ID, or the original activation link, I’m afraid we won’t be able to help you recover the account.

    We have a strict policy in place to protect our users from third parties who might try to use our support system to gain access to other users’ accounts.

    Thank you. I've advised the end user that their only way to gain access to the domain is probably to reactivate their email and gain a new password through that mechanism. Fortunately, they do control the email domain for the original user so that is an option for them.

    Thanks so much for your help.

  • You’re welcome :)
