Removing old department site – Don’t know who created
-
I work for a university department and, through Googling, we discovered a WordPress.com site for the department that was created without authorization several years ago. We’d like to get this site removed since it’s creating confusion with our current site. But we don’t know the username or email associated with it. (And I suspect it may have been a grad student and thus the email is probably long gone.)
Is there any way to get access to this site?

Hi there, I’ve flagged your thread for staff attention and assistance. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

@leelman – please review and follow the steps here to get started with proving ownership of that site:

That’s the problem. We have no idea who created this site, don’t know the username or email address and have none of the info needed to prove ownership. Site seems to have been created in 2015, but we had no knowledge of its existence until a couple days ago.

Thanks for the details. In this case, I’m afraid we won’t be able to help you recover access to the account so that you can close it, but we may have some alternatives for you. Please reach out via
passwordhelp@wordpress.com, and our team will get back to you. Thanks!
