Removing Tags, Comments, and Adding "Read More" Link
-
Good morning,
I’d like to hide the tags on my blog. By reading through the older posts I gathered I will have to buy the CSS upgrade. However, I have no experience with CSS. Can anybody tell me what codes I would have to enter to hide the tags?
Also, I would like my posts to show only about 5 lines and then have “read more” option. Can anyone help me with that as well?
Lastly, I would like to remove the comment box. If anybody knows how to do this, please let me know.
Thank you very much.
By the way, my blog is: feistyadvocate.com and I am using Pilcrow as a theme.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

1) Without CSS, if you don’t tag your posts, there will be no tags appearing. Kind of a sledgehammer approach to the problem, but one solution that’s free. Someone familiar with CSS can give you the other fix.
2) To remove the comment box from all posts, go to Settings > Discussion, and untick “allow comments” & “allow link notifications (pingbacks/trackbacks).”
3) You can use the “more” tag. It’s available by icon in your editor. Place your cursor where you want the more tag and click the icon. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

@thesacredpath: I’d like the categories link to remain but, if there is no way around it, removing it is not a big issue.
@mmadfan: I was able to remove the comments but the link is still there (although it says comments closed when I click on it). Do you know how to remove the link?
Thank you both for your help!

The following will get rid of the tags and the comment link, but leave the categories.
.entry-tags, .comment-number { display: none; }You can try this out by going to appearance > custom design and clicking on the CSS tab. Then delete all the informational text in the edit window and paste the above in and then click the “preview” button. If the stuff still appears on the preview page, refresh the preview page. It has been a little flakey over the past few months.

@feistyadvocate
You have posted your email address in a form that spam bots will harvest on your contact page. I suggest that you remove it and use the contact form provided by WordPress.com instead. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/ -

@timethief, thank you so much! It looks more professional now and I won’t have to deal with spam. :)

fiestyadvocate was advised in order to remove his tags and comments to paste:
.entry-tags, .comment-number {
display: none;
}You can try this out by going to appearance > custom design and clicking on the CSS tab. Then delete all the informational text in the edit window and paste the above in and then click the “preview” button. If the stuff still appears on the preview page, refresh the preview page. It has been a little flakey over the past few months.
My question is what do I paste to get rid of the tags, but definitely keep the comments?
Thanks, Pamela
(my blog is jlep.wordpress.com and I don’t like all those tags showing). -
@jlep, on the theme you are using, Kubrick, it is all or nothing. You can’t do one without the other since everything is under the same selector in the CSS. The CSS in each theme is different and the theme you are using is really old so it is “thin” on selectors in the markup and CSS.
Also, do NOT have duplicate tags and categories. That makes the search engines suspicious and they could actually decide not to index your site. It can also cause other issues with wordpress that can be hard to resolve.

“on Kubrick, it is all or nothing. You can’t do one without the other since everything is under the same selector in the CSS. The CSS in each theme is different and the theme you are using is really old so”
Are there any free themes you might recommend that are newer and would support me removing the display of tags, but keeping comments?
” Also, do NOT have duplicate tags and categories”
Do you mean don’t put duplicate tags/categories regarding the same one post?
Or do you mean that if I have say 14 posts, the tag/category “Government” can only be used for one of the posts?
Sorry for all the questions, still learning and trying to make the blog better looking.
Thanks,
Pamela -
Well, even some of the newer themes are a little thin on selectors, but one would be the one @feistyadvocate is using, Pilcrow. Best thing is to set up a private test blog and then try themes out and look through the markup (XHTML) and the CSS to see how they are structured and how generous the theme designer has been.

Ok, I will play around with some of the newer themes, including Pilcrow. Now the code given above was to remove tags and comments. So if I am able to find a newer theme that will support removing tags, but leaving the comment option, what code would I paste in the CSS tab?
-
CSS is theme specific, so the code is virtually always going to be different for each theme. The names of the classes and IDs in the CSS are determined by the designer and everyone has their own preferences for labeling things.

Ok. Thanks so much for info so far. Another question please. I don’t know code, but I’m trying to learn. :) If I go with Pilcrow like @fiestyadvocate then that same code work with me right?
He used
.entry-tags, .comment-number {
display: none;
}to get rid of tags and comments. What code would I use in Pilcrow to get rid of tags and keep comments.?

Ok and just one more question please (I think only one more anyway), For @fiestaadvocate this code stopped both the tags and the comments on Pilcrow.
.entry-tags, .comment-number {
display: none;
}On Pilcrow I want stop the tags and keep the comments? Wouldn’t I have to change something, or my code to keep the comments would be the same as his to stop the comments?
