Removing the DATE

  • Unknown's avatar

    How does one remove the date? It is not needed.

    Scott.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Whether the date appears or not is theme dependent.

    It may or may not be possible to remove it with the paid CSS upgrade. ( I do not know about CSS so I am not certain.)

    See this post:

    Having the DATE on a post is annoying, especially if you don’t want it there. Why do they do this to us? How do I remove it?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Most people want dates on their blog posts, and you would be surprised how many want the time of posting shown as well. Few people come to these forums saying, “I hate the date on my blog posts, why do they do that, it’s stupid.”

    It can be removed with the paid CSS upgrade. All you have to do is pay $14.97 for the upgrade and then paste this into your CSS edit window.

    .entrytitle h3 {
    display:none;
    }

    We at wp.com all share the same software and themes. What is annoying to one is a plus for another. If you could change the php/basic function of your theme, then it would change it for everyone else using that theme. Someone would be unhappy and try to change things again. That’s why we can’t do it: wp.com does not allow access to that.

    As I said, you may be able to hide the dates with paid CSS but I believe it depends on the theme.

    There are various basic html tricks that may, or more likely may not hide those dates/times. My own header and background are using some of those tricks. But again, it is theme dependent and IMO a lot of extra work.

    You are not so much of a doll anymore.

    Yikes! and sorry.
    tsp did say it is possible with the paid CSS, though. He would certainly know—an expert volunteer in these forums.

    No, I’m sorry Tess…..I just wish this was a tad easier. I stink at this and have been thru so many of these ”free” options that are suppose to be easy.

    Blog posts are meant to be a chronological record and the dates make sense. I don’t know how many times I’ve been doing research, find exactly what I’m looking for on a blog or website somewhere but it has no date, and when I send them a query asking them when it was written, find that the article is six or 8 years old and has absolutely zero relevance today. It only APPEARS to have relevance.

    There are articles out there telling of ways to do certain things with self-hosted wordpress that people are people are trying to rely on today, but because the author didn’t date the article, or include what version of wordpress they were writing about, people are trying to make it work on today’s version of wordpress and the article was written for three major revisions back and won’t even come close to working.

    I’ve called reputable news blogs for quoting stuff in their articles that they pulled from the web thinking it was current, but what they were quoting was three or four years old and irrelevant to what they were talking about today.

    I’m immediately suspicious when I find something on the web with no date since I cannot put it in historical perspective. Was it written last week or 10 years ago?

    No offense taken.
    This hosting may be “free” but it is very high quality.
    The “free” is in quotes because wp.com makes money by displaying ads on our blogs (see support to learn about the upgrade not to have those adverts).
    But even though there is a learning curve, it is completely worth it to persist. It’s very stable, and our blogs are well publicized to search engines automatically by wordpress.com.
    Give it a chance.
    Easy is not the same as effective, IMO.

    Now that my rant is over, since blogs were meant to be chronological records, dates on posts make sense. That is not to say that in some cases dates may be irrelevant, or the blog owner may feel they are irrelevant.

    The above CSS change will take the date away. There isn’t any way to remove the date without the paid CSS upgrade, and keep in mind that the above CSS change will not work on all themes since each theme is written by an individual designer, and they are the ones that determine how they are going to group things in the CSS. In some themes, the blog title, author, categories, tags, date and the comment link are all controlled by one section of the CSS, so their is no way to remove just one of those elements. Removing one removes them all.

    @thesacredpath
    I agree with you about the date being useful for most blogs. Often it does influence how one can judge posts and their relevance by their age. Personally I like to know how old a post is.

    But that is not always important. “How-to” (recipes, origami, math basics, references to insect or plant species, etc—you get the idea.)

    tsp,
    sorry, forgot to refresh after getting interrupted and before posting…

  • Unknown's avatar

    I don’t want the date AUGUST 14 2009 sitting above my BIO when one clicks on my HOME PAGE.

    Have a look at it and let me know if you see what I mean.

    Thanks.

    Scott.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Once you add posts, that one post/bio will not be on top (unless you make it a sticky post). Why not put your bio on an “About” page? See mine. The month/year I put there, it was not auto generated.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’ll try that.
    Thanks.
