Removing the 'information' widget on Suburbia theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

    Sorry to trouble you but I’ve recently changed to the Suburbia theme and wondered if it was possible to reposition/remove the ‘information’, ‘shortlink’ or ‘navigation’ widgets on the Suburbia theme?

    On ‘Pages’ they do not appear. However on ‘Posts’ they are the first items to appear on the right-hand sidebar.

    I cannot see any of these in the admin – widgets section. Otherwise I would simply delete or drag them down below the widgets I would like to appear at the top.

    I’m guessing the answer will be no, as I have looked at other Suburbia themes and they all appear to have these items at the top… But I would be grateful if you could confirm this for me.

    Additionally, and sorry for going off topic slightly. I have used the same CSS command to remove the dates from my blog posts and to change the link colour throughout the site but neither appear to be having any effect on Suburbia?

    .entry-meta {
    display: none;
    }

    .entry-content a {
    color: #000000;
    text-decoration: none;
    }

    Many thanks in advance for your help. As always, it is much appreciated!

  • Hi Sean, the Information, Shortlink, and Navigation items are hard-coded into the theme, rather than widgets.

    You can hide all three blocks by adding this code to your custom CSS:

    .meta {
    display: none;
    }

    The entry-meta and entry-content classes are used in some themes, but not Suburbia. The code above should take care of removing the date on your posts, and to change the colour of links in posts, you could try this:

    .hentry a {
    text-decoration: none;
    color: #bf0c18;
    }

    Feel free to use whatever colour you like, but suggest avoiding black, since without underlining, it’ll make your links invisible. :-)

    Let me know how it goes.

    If you need further CSS help, please feel free to post in our CSS Customization forum.

    As 50 would say… l love you like a fat kid loves cake. Really appreciate your help. And point taken re the link colour ;-)

    I’ll try not to bug you guys again but if so, I’ll go via the CSS forum. Thanks again!

  • You’re very welcome. :-)

    Feel free to “bug” us anytime, that’s what we’re here for. Happy blogging!

    Well… and I’m so sorry for asking so soon. I’ve been checking out the Suburbia posts under the CSS forum and was even able to help another person out after you helped me above.

    But I was unable to help myself yet again. The question was asked about having a custom image in the background that isn’t tiled. I have tried out the command as advised by the support staff but I think I am going wrong with the image title. Is there any chance you could save me again?

    body.background-image {
    background-image:url(‘img_london2.jpg’);
    background-repeat:no-repeat;
    }

    It’s the url part which must be wrong I’m sure. London2 is the title of the image in my WordPress media file but I wonder if that is relevant.

    Massive thanks in advance and apologies again.

  • Your instinct is right about the file path – images referenced in your custom CSS need to be a full path, starting with the http://. You could go into your media library to grab the full file path here:

    http://cl.ly/image/2f1x0o1y2N04

    Also, the class on your body tag isn’t quite right – it should be custom-background instead of background-image.

    That said, since the image is the same one you’re already using, this code alone would work to stop the image from tiling:

    body.custom-background {
        background-repeat: no-repeat !important;
    }

    This is what it would look like with the image defined – you’ll see there’s no difference in the resulting display:

    body.custom-background {
    background-image:url('http://seansmithsondotcom.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/london2.jpg');
    background-repeat:no-repeat !important;
    }

    Just bear in mind that since your image is so small it may not look quite as you intended. :-)

    Thank you so much once again Kathryn. Though you are quite right, it actually comes out much, much worse haha.

    Maybe I’m not as useless as I thought though as somehow I managed to get that on my own… Oh well… people will just have to live with loads of red buses and phone boxes rather than one of each!

    Much obliged and I shall leave you in peace… for now ;-)

  • Hehe – no worries. :-)

    Kathryn,

    I am sooo sorry for contacting you yet again. I’ve been playing around some more and thought I had nailed everything but evidently not.

    If it’s not too much trouble, could you please put me out of my misery?

    I’m trying to figure out how to change the colour of the ‘current page’ link if that makes sense? As in when you visit my home page, the link ‘The Office Inbetweener’ will be highlighted (in gold) on the left side of the page.

    Ideally I would like this colour to match the title colour but I cannot for the life of me find anything in the support forums to help. It’s probably there I’m sure. Sorry for asking.

    I assume that changing this will also ensure that the ‘older posts’ tab at the bottom of the page also changes colour. As these seem to be the only two things that are part of the original Suburbia theme.

    Finally, and this is potentially an error with my site rather than me wanting to make any amendments. So far I have done 16 posts. 13 are currently displayed on the homepage. However when you click on older posts (both on Firefox and Explorer) only 2 of the remaining posts are displayed?

    It is still possible to access the missing post via the custom menu but I cannot figure out what I have done wrong (if anything).

    Apologies for the lengthy message and as always, thank you so much!

    Sean

  • Hi there, I’m actually seeing 16 posts on your homepage already.

    1-7: http://cl.ly/image/0j441F3E450X
    8-16: http://cl.ly/image/0B0T1l0t3H33

    Could you give me links to the missing posts so I can have a look?

    I’ll reply separately about the link colours.

  • Since I see that you use Firefox, highly recommend the Firebug tool for helping to tweak CSS.

    Using Firebug, I found that the colour of your current page link is defined by this piece of code:

    #access .current_page_item > a, #access .current_page_ancestor > a, #access .current-menu-item > a, #access .current-menu-ancestor > a {
        color: #C17E08;
    }

    By visiting this link I was able to confirm that C17E08 is the gold colour: http://0to255.com/C17E08

    (You can also see the gold colour right in the Firebug tool when you select the element.)

    You can modify this to use your site title colour like so:

    #access .current_page_item > a, #access .current_page_ancestor > a, #access .current-menu-item > a, #access .current-menu-ancestor > a {
        color: #3A7F7F !important;
    }

    The !important bit is needed to override the default CSS hierarchy.

    For the “Older Posts” link at the button, this is the original:

    #infinite-handle span {
        background: none repeat scroll 0 0 #835504;
    }

    To make that teal:

    #infinite-handle span {
        background: none repeat scroll 0 0 #3A7F7F !important;
    }

    You are just brilliant Kathryn. Thank you so much.

    I’ll definitely have a look at the CSS intro and the Firebug tool. Again, I’m so sorry for hassling you. When I was using the Chunk theme there appeared to be more help available in the forums hence I didn’t come crying to you guys all the time…

    I shall have a play around with the colours, etc. right now. Hopefully I won’t come calling again!

    With regard to the older posts point, I’ve changed things back to the way they were and again, one of the older links fails to show up. The link is http://seansmithson.com/2013/04/29/grad-schemes-2/

    What’s odd is that you can defintiely link through to this post via the widgets or fixed pages. No rush at all on this. You’ve already been so amazing.

    And if you’re ever in London (I assume you’re in the US), I shall buy you a drink to thank you properly!

    Hello again Kathryn,

    I’ve started reading through the daily post link you sent me. Very useful (if a little confusing still ha).

    Just wanted to say thank you once again for your help. You’re an absolute star and I really don’t think there is anything else I can modify/destroy now!

    Best wishes,
    Sean

  • With regard to the older posts point, I’ve changed things back to the way they were and again, one of the older links fails to show up.

    When you say you changed things back the way they were, could you let me know exactly what you changed, as that might provide a clue. Did you change the two posts that were stickied before back to regular posts, and sticky a different post instead? Did you change anything else?

    Glad you got the CSS tweaks sorted out!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh yes, sorry.

    So I ‘unstickied’ those two and ‘stickied’ a new one. And in addition, I set the home page to show at most 13 posts. Meaning that when you click on ‘older posts’, 3 more should appear (I would assume).

    This was exactly how I had things set up when I posted the original query.

    Thanks again for your prompt responses and help.

  • Thanks for confirming that! I’ve been able to replicate this issue on a test site, so it looks like something the theme developers will need to look into. I’ll bring this to their attention and keep you posted here – thanks in advance for your patience.

    Hi Kathryn,

    Just to let you know that this appears to have been fixed. Thanks again for being so awesome!

  • Excellent! Do let me know if it happens again. :-)
