Removing the scrollbar from the post editor one of the worst "improvements" yet

  • Hi there,

The pinning of some elements found in the Publish box has been discussed by our developers and is being considered. I will keep you guys updated on this one. Thank you!

    Thanks for the update, druesome.

Over the days I rather participated here to mention some bugs that cause problems. Today I have one “larger” draft in the making and really could now notice too that the scrollbar is away. I now can say too that this does not work very well from the usability aspect unless the publish tools on the right side become movable or pinned as some said here.

    Are you a desktop user?
    Do you mind telling us:
    (a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/

Yep, I am desktop user when it comes to writing on my blog. At times I use the wordpress app on my android phone (Xperia P Jelly Bean 4.1.2), but rarely and if, then only to moderate comments or to answer them or to read blogs before sleeping. But about writing, I am pure desktop user. I´d say im to 95% desktop user.

Desktop PC, Windows 7 Professional 64bit

    2a) Recent 31.0 Firefox version

Thanks for sharing your details. They are the same as mine and I’ve been wondering if all of those posting here with issues are desktop users or not.

  • Unknown's avatar

Not sure. I sadly don´t own a tablet to rule this out.

Only thing I´ve done for a test, I disabled all my Firefox addons except for NoScript. But I basically allowed this scriptblocker to let all legit websites that I use perform scripts anyway (whitelisted them), including certain blogs and WordPress infastructure based URL´s anyway. So, I do think I can at least rule out interfering browser extansions. Thought, didn´t try another browser yet. Proofread button still causes trouble. But good to know that they work on the issue.

    @dandelionsalad,

Except the preview button (under the title) disappears very quickly once you scroll down in a post. I use that button very frequently and it’s a chore now to find it while writing or editing a post. Adding anything more there would not help.

True. That area could be pinned just like the toolbar is, and include “save” and “update” buttons.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @ dandelionsalad,

The toolbar, which is already pinned, has room for several buttons. “Save,” “preview,” and “update” buttons could easily be added there. Perhaps a couple of other buttons, too.

  • Unknown's avatar

To go back for a moment on the scroll bar they said it was basically changed for long writers .why couldnt they just use the distraction free area

Pinning or whatever the whole box that has the Publish / Save /review etc. buttons in it should be much easier than moving buttons to a new area – much less testing involved also – less chance for a new bug to occur

paulcd, yes, I agree and mentioned the same thing in a comment on July 23.

Auxclass, yes, I was thinking that, too, it would be easier than adding to the toolbar. Plus, I and others need the Categories and Tags modules accessible as well.

I’m not a coder or tester. Wouldn’t know. Without benefit of a technical perspective the two proposed ideas seem equally simple to me.

the two proposed ideas seem equally simple

I used to program and design systems, different that the editor and moving an existing box is easier than moving several single items –

also keeping the same box – keeps the same look and feel so users do not need to learn a second place to look for a command –

sometimes the difference literally between something working and crashing some equipment was swapping two buttons horizontally on the screen

    Yes

Laptop and desktop machines; mobile-wise, I use the WordPress app on Android 4.2.2 on a Lenovo A3000 tablet for replying to comments on the go, and the website for more detailed stats. The app is very useful actually, and performs well.

    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary

    Firefox 31.

Well just got my blog weekly updates from WP in it they detail the scroll bar is gone [improvement] – and it was people that long write . when they could’ve used the distribution screen so one type blogger gets a great fix and the rest of us pay for it.oh well they are not listening to any scroll bar complaints so do not think for a minute they will listen to any thing else unless you’re a paying user WordPress use to be fantastic especially helping people but they are getting like the other “large” sites
get rid of support throw every one to a forum and only answer what they want and help sections that only offer basics

I tried – again – to edit an existing post. No scrollbar, of course (my need to create long posts has been sacrificed to the whim of the hipsters). As I scroll down, the left-hand side menu goes all the way up and disappears. So does the right-hand one. I’m on Firefox 31.

No, don’t tell me to “clear my cache”. I already did that. As it is right now, WordPress.com is utterly useless for anything longer than a tweet. It’s no longer a blogging platform, but something that no one knows what it is.

BTW, why did the tooltips on the editor’s buttons lose all mention of the keyboard shortcuts that corresponded to them?

  • Unknown's avatar

Same behaviour in Chrome, too. It’s simply not an improvement. It doesn’t help me at all. I can’t “focus on editing”. It makes me focus on going back and forth. It’s not productive, it’s not intuitive, it’s the worst kind of “improvement” that anyone could ever think of.

@monaeberhardt: I agree. Editing of posts — both verbal and visual — continues to be cumbersome. I add dozens of tags from my post content: I used to be able to synch/align the body of the post to tag entries so I could easily see what to add; now I have to scroll up and down, up and down. I’m getting motion sickness just from adding tags. This is not a carousel ride, WP — please know this touted “improvement” continues to devolve and diminish my daily posting experience. I do not want to have to migrate my blogs to another platform. I like WordPress, but my loyalty is being sorely tested now with each and every post I make. Kindly return the scrollbar now.
