Removing the scrollbar from the post editor one of the worst "improvements" yet

Follow the money theteaspilleddaily. Device makers probably calculate that they make more money selling smaller devices. Different markets mean more profits, but at some point, makers are just going to call it off because, How hard do you want to work? One market is easier than two. Yes there’s lots of desktops, and laptops, out there. But no one tells private companies what to do. It’s the other way around. Eventually, Even desktops and laptops, and (for the people) productivity, could disappear – if makers decide that it will be.
Do you find that undemocratic? If so, then you’re naive. There’s no democracy in corporatocracy.
Software makers don’t care either way. And orgs like WP, which could talk to us openly about these political issues if it wanted to, will have to follow along.

Do you really believe this? Then check out this: Wikipedia PC Marketshare
Especially the Unit sales charts 1996-2013. I hope your post was some kind of irony.
I always need to laugh when people argue that the PC market could die just because there is an alternative mobile marked with ever increasing sales. It´s like saying people eat more apples, soon they won´t sell bananas anymore. Stop spreading this, because this is naive.
PC´s still have a market. Especially in the professional sector. Check out making-offs of your favorite movies, games or what not and tell me what kind of hardware and software they are using to create this kind of art. No serious expert would create and render a 3d animation on a tablet. And now I am just talking about one niche!
The PC market won´t die. In fact it´s sales are heavily increasing over the last decades.

There is no reason for you to get snarky. I’m being neither ironic nor am I pretending to be an expert on what’s going on in the market. But I do pay attention to what’s going on in the world. And I do believe – because the evidence is more than abundant – that today’s capitalism operates in such a way that it can be properly described as mafia capitalism. Today’s capitalists are mutations and nothing like they once were, as Canadian philosopher John Ralston Saul points out. They no longer take chances. Their idea of success is to get big, like Smith in the Matrix. (Which isn’t to say that they don’t give any thought to how they big.) And they are big believers in exploitation and inequality, which is why they’ve captured governments everywhere. Governments no longer speak for or in defense of the people, as free trade agreements that include mechanisms like ISD (http://bit.ly/1uWS54Q). They put the people in their (slave) place and let corporations, like the oil industry, and the mic which needs huge amounts of oil, call the shots.
You show no indication that you got the gist of my post. It isn’t about whether there can be, or ‘is’ if you like, a market for desktops. It’s about what those with all the economic ‘and’ political power want, period.
Do you agree with the ‘improvements’ that WordPress has recently made and which are causing a lot of us desktop users to squawk? Can you explain them? I wonder whether has parallels with Microsoft’s decision to roll out the desktop-unfriendly OS for desktops. Do you see any?
I hope that desktops do not go away. But I am not privy to what scamming, tax evading tech companies decide behind closed doors. I don’t pretend to know. I am speculating and trying to make sense of developments based upon the knowledge I do possess. But if you want to smear me, for some reason, then feel free.

i’m not convinced that it’s a mobile-vs-desktop thing. while that might be part of it, they seem to make significant efforts in other places to make sure things work on both so i don’t think that’s the whole story — or even most of it. more telling, i think, is the lack of admission that this is a problem for some (many? i have no idea) and the lack of response/dialogue on the matter. it seems probable to me that it was known that this would be unpopular, but damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. someone had an agenda but i don’t think we know it all.

Hello bloggers!
There’s now a new option found under Screen Options to bring back the inner scrollbar to the post editor. While editing or creating a post, click on the Screen Options tab on the top right of the page. On the slide down screen, uncheck the box beside “Expand the editor to match the window height.”
Some caveats:
- For now, unchecking the option isn’t remembered. You would have to uncheck it again after reloading the post either by saving or publishing it.
- The content box may need to be adjusted to your desired height by clicking and dragging the bottom-right corner of it. Again, this needs to be repeated after the post is published or saved.
Let me know if you have any questions about it. Thanks!

@Druesome it’s back! Thanks for the huge update and forgive all the complaining. It’s not that the many of us who use this site are inconsiderate, I quite like some of the changes WP has made to the overall feel of the behind the scenes making of our blogs, including the photo gallery update, however it’s frustrating when we aren’t given options at times. I will use this from now on. Again, thank you.

@aarby you do know that productivity is a billion dollar industry right? You do know that Google Drive, OneDrive, Evernote, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, etc., are all considered productivity and combined are multi-billion dollar industries right? Do you actually believe that productivity is going anywhere? Also, you think mobile OS’s will take over traditional methods of transferring data? I fret you do, however thank you for the early morning laugh. It was much needed.

I’m not so sure how useful this temporary fix will be when writing a new long piece or editing previous posts. I generally save often when making a new post.
That fact that it doesn’t stay “clicked” when opening another post for editing is just more clicks I have to make.
I refuse to use the “new” blue editor and recommend others to boycott it as well.

@ theteaspilledaily: Is that a friendly laugh? If I wasn’t being logical, then your effort to make me look stupid might make some progress. I am not making assertions. I’m speculating, logically. Less material for the same sort of devices means less cost for device makers and more profit. As for productivity, Did you not understand my statement?
I even used parentheses. I’m talking about the productivity missing by users of WP who are here in great numbers complaining about a hobbled WP. Let me see; Some 605 comments for the Bee Bop thing and some 391 comments for this thread. Meanwhile, Most threads are 1 or 6 comments long. No lost productivity there.
Did you understand my comparison with Windows 8? That did happen on this planet you know. See Mashable’s article “Was Windows 8 A Mistake? Microsoft Seems To Think So.” (http://on.mash.to/1smx6bm) If the article reduces my need to speculate that desktops are headed the way of the dinosaur, then I’m delighted. (I always ‘speculated’ and I made it clear that I could stand to be corrected by admitting that I’m not an expert on the subect) While desktops may be safe for now, there’s no doubt that users (like myself) were not normally productive when they had that monstrosity dropped into their laps. I bought a new laptop with windows 8 preloaded. No one warned me beforehand. I thought I was going to spend a few hours adjusting to some minor tweaks and then be back in action. Not even close. Fortunately, My friend in IT, in the investment bank I worked in at the time, had me bring upstairs where he proceeded to nuke the os and install windows 7 in it’s place. But he was thrown a few curves. I used the expression ‘nuked’ for a reason. It wasn’t a simple thing to dig that crap out. But it can be done. You just have to do radical surgery. Again, there’s a productivity hit. It’s not a fancy version of productivity perhaps. But too freaking bad.
Having an opinion, even if it is sort of wacky, isn’t normally enough to make good people angry with you. What is it folks?

Just tried it, and this works perfectly. Thank you so much for taking all these comments into account.
Please now don’t delete this wonderful editor in favour of the new and not-improved one (“beep beep boop”), it’s amazing just how much better the blogging experience is with the old editor.
Thanks again.

I just edited a post previously published and got a MUCH better interface. Started with something called beboop? It was awesome. But my normal interface is still the same. How do I get the new changes? I read back and don’t see.

@educationrealist: If you have some time, you can read 27 pages of posts
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/beep-beep-boop-screen-is-a-joke-is-this-a-glitch?replies=781and got a MUCH better interface. Started with something called beboop? It was awesome
Are you kidding, right?

I need this “temporary” fix to be made permanent. I do Save Draft and Preview a lot.
I would agree that the setting should be permanent. I’ve asked about the possibility, and I’ll be sure to let you know what our developers say. Thanks!
-
Thank you, druesome. Appreciate you letting the developers know our concerns.
Is there an internal scroll bar in the “new” blue BBB editor?
-
This “fix” is not a fix, though. All we get (on Firefox 31 and Google Chrome 36) is a super-long “scroll bar” that spans the entire length of the post, and we’re forced to scroll up and down to access the editor’s formatting functions. We need a proper scroll bar.
-
Hi everyone!
I’m happy to report that the setting to get the inner scrollbar back can now be remembered. The only catch is you have to clear your cookies and log back in for it to begin working.
Please follow these steps:
- Clear your browser cookies.
- Log back in.
- Write or edit a post in the old wp-admin editor.
- Pull down Screen Options and uncheck “Expand the editor to match the window height.”
- Save the post.
“Expand the editor to match the window height.” should remain unchecked after the page loads. Let me know if you run into any issues!
Is there an internal scroll bar in the “new” blue BBB editor?
Yes, the new blue editor has an internal scrollbar. :)
Thanks!
