Most themes have a default set of widgets that will display and only disappear when you add another widget to the sidebar. If you don’t want any widgets, you can try adding an empty Text widget.
But before you get too far along, you’ll want to review the WPcom Terms of Service:

This thread was not marked duplicate at the time I answered it and I overlooked checking for a duplicate thread.
It would help the other volunteers if you would mark a duplicate thread as duplicate at the time you answer one of the other iterations and post a link back to the one you’ve posted a reply in. As volunteers, we try to complement each other, not compete. Thanks.

@ justjennifer,
You’re the second member who falsely accused me of competing today. I sincerely don’t understand where this impression is coming from.It would help the other volunteers if you would mark a duplicate thread as duplicate at the time you answer one of the other iterations and post a link back to the one you’ve posted a reply in.
I’m well aware of how to note the presence of a duplicate article with a link to it at the time I discovered the duplication. That’s exactly what I’ve done here. Instead of assuming that to be the case, you have apparently leaped to the conclusion that I deviously chose to not tell you about it before, just so that I could get a thrill later or something. Wow. Sorry, I don’t play that game, and I don’t deserve to have such allegations thrown at me out of the blue. Why do you presume that I knew it was a duplicate before I identified it as such here?
My post was a complement here. Just as my post was a complement or supplement in the other cited instance.

I am not “accusing” you of anything.
End of story.

I’m not competing. Just helping. A thank you would have been sufficient.

I never said it was. Am I supposed to know about every topic a member creates because I posted on one of them?

You know, when I have to tell people to chill, people should chill.
Chill, people. Did you answer the question correctly? Great. Doesn’t matter how many times a question gets answered correctly. We’re all good. Moving on.
