Removing Widgets and keeping their settings
-
Howdy! The Custom HTML widget (Net Neutrality) in single post view on my below site should come down, but I’d like to keep the widget configuration settings in case I need it to use it again for something else.
Is it possible yet to remove widgets in the Customizer and save their settings or do I still need to remove the widget to Inactive Widgets in the WP Admin>Appearance>Widgets dashboard?
If it’s not yet possible, is this something being considered for inclusion in the Customizer or elsewhere in the New Dashboard/Calypso? (And have we settled on a name yet?) :)
Thanks for any help given.

Hi Jennifer,
I tested this, and removing a widget from the Customizer moved it to the Inactive section in WP-Admin for me.
The Customizer forms part of Core, not Calypso (even though on WordPress.com the Customizer lives inside Calypso), and there is an open ticket there for adding inactive widgets to the Customizer:
https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/27404
It’s an old ticket, but it is currently being worked on.
The name for the My Sites interface has always been Calypso. The original version was informally referred to as the new dashboard. That version was replaced with Calypso that was officially launched in November 2015.

Good morning Herman, Thanks for testing that. I didn’t experience the same thing when I removed a widget on my test site in the Customizer, so I’ll go ahead and test again later after copying out the widget text.
I did notice that some of my site’s widgets show “Delete” and others “Remove” so perhaps it depends on that?
Thanks for the background on the New Dash. :) Calypso it is then officially, even though I think this is confusing to new users. Wouldn’t just calling it Dashboard be less confusing? Just my 2¢.

An update. I now see that the “delete” appears before publishing changes in the Customizer and “remove” after the changes have been published. But still not finding the removed widget in WP Admin Inactive widgets.

I just tested it again, and my removed widget again went into Inactive widgets.
Did you again click Publish in the Customizer after you clicked Remove?
Wouldn’t just calling it Dashboard be less confusing?
Possibly, until someone has to visit WP-Admin to do something :)
I tend to refer to the My Site and WP-Admin dashboards for clarity’s sake, but really, however it makes most sense to you is fine. We just try to avoid new dashboard/old dashboard terminology.

I did click Publish after removing the widget. I’ve got screenshots from both the Customizer and WP Admin before and after removing the widget if that helps, but there’s really nothing there that hasn’t been described in this thread.
Are there specific widgets involved? I tried the Archives and Calendar widgets.
Honestly, My Site dashboard is a better description overall. Maybe consider adding “Calypso” to the glossary section of Learn WordPressdotcom?

That’s really strange. I checked with several widgets, including those two, and they’re moved to inactive for me each time. I also checked multiple sites and themes.
Did you originally add the widget via WP-Admin or the Customizer? It doesn’t appear to make a difference on my end, but it’s the only other thing I can think of.
-
Both adding and removing the widgets was done through the Customizer. I only checked the WP Admin dash to see if the removed widget showed up there, but it wasn’t.

I tried with a test account and it worked there for me as well, so it’s not an employee-only feature either. I can’t think how your browser/OS combo could cause this, but I also can’t replicate what happens for you in any way.
I’m afraid I’m out of suggestions for now except to use WP-Admin to move the widget to inactive. Hopefully that will be added to the Customizer’s widget interface soon.

Just coming back to say that testing this in Chrome 64.0.3282.119 (Official Build) (64-bit) did not change anything. No widget removed from the Customizer appeared in my WP Admin Inactive widgets. But we’ll leave this for now. I’ve done as you suggested. Thanks again.

:)
Thanks again, feel free to test on my shutterclutter site; perhaps it’s something peculiar to the site itself. But no rush here and thanks for the help.

Okay, looks like it might be account-related. It works for some account and not others, so either it’s a brand new feature that’s still in the process of being applied to all sites, or it’s limited testing before a full roll-out. Either way, the Customizer is at this point waiting for Gutenberg from what I can find, so we’ll probably see a few changes to how widgets work in the next few months in any case.
