Rename and remap
-
Hi there,
I would like to know if there is a way to rename my wordpress.com blog from “A” to “B”, provided I own both blogs.
When I try, I get an error message saying “B” is already in use.
Could I rename “B” to something else, say, “C”, and then “A” to “B”?One more thing. I successfully remapped (via DNS) my “A” to an external domain name of mine, which is now the primary domain name for the site. Everything works like a charm. What happens after I rename “A” to something else? Will the remap break?
I am on Personal plan.
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
If both A and B already exist, you can’t rename A to B, period. Our blog rename tool only works if the new address does not already exist. Deleting or renaming B also won’t help – that will just permanently remove name B from use; it won’t free B up for re-use.
So in this situation the only way to “change” A to B is to export your content from A, and import it to B. Afterwards we can also move your stats and followers over, but theme, settings and likes cannot be moved.
To be clear, this applies to free *.wordpress.com addresses.
For mapped domains we can move them between sites for you without any problems, though that will cause links to the old site to break if a particular domain is no longer mapped to the site.
I’ll be much better able to advise you on what to do if you give me the actual addresses involved, though.
