Renamed slugs are causing broken links, why?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve ended up with some odd URL paths and when I change the slugs, I’m ending up with broken links. Problem began when layout changes to pages were not being accepted. I copied the code into a new page, and deleted the old. That’s where the problem began. What can I do to resolve this? Thanks.

P.S. My blog URL, that appears in the form below, is incorrect. It should be calligraphymanitoba.com.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Could you point me to a URL that is not broken?

To be clear, you originally had a page like this:

    http://mysite.com/this-slug

You then changed the URL to:

    http://mysite.com/that-slug

Is that correct? If so, the previous URL (this-slug) will be broken. I’m afraid there’s no way to fix that without changing the slug back to the previous value.

    Thanks for your response Jeremey.

I fired off my question quickly. I’ll try to add some clarity.

There are no broken links on my site right now. They become broken when I try to rename the permalinks of my pages.

This is how it started –
I copied the coding from most of my existing pages into new pages. It seemed to be an easy fix for a problem that I was having – obviously not. The coding from the page “workshop”, for example, was pasted into a new page that I created. Then I deleted the original “workshop” page. I went to save my new page the same as the now deleted “workshop” page. My permalink entry was not accepted and was assigned the name “workshop-2”. When I tried again, it did accept “workshop” but links to the page were broken throughout the site. Renamed it back to “-2” and things are fine. Now I’ve got a site of -2’s, and even a -2-2. I’d like to clean up the names.

    Here’s a URL –
    http://calligraphymanitoba.com/workshops-2/

    Make sense?

    Thanks,
    Sheila

    Hi Sheila!

Thanks for clarifying. That does indeed make sense.

I believe the issue here is that the previous versions of the pages are still in your trash folder here:

    https://calligraphersguildmanitoba.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=trash&post_type=page

As long as those items are in your trash folder, the slug (workshop) will continue to be taken (which is why you’re getting workshop-2). Can we first try to delete all of the pages in your trash by using the “Delete Permanently” option within the Bulk Actions drop-down?

    Hi Jeremey,

    That worked perfectly!

Thanks so much for sharing your time and wisdom. I appreciate it.
