Renaming blog, site name

  I started a new blog, giving it a name with the following structure:
  “xy.wordpress”

  While working on the site, somehow it changed to “xyblog.wordpress.

  I’ve tried to change its name back (to drop the “blog” bit), but no luck.
  It tells me that name has already been used and that the author deleted the site.

  Thing is, I’m the author, who accidentally deleted it.

  I would figure that if it is deleted, it’s not in use, and would therefore be available for anyone to pick up.

  Any suggestions appreciated.

  Unfortunately no. That’s why there were many warnings when it was deleted. Sites already deleted by their authors two or more years ago may become available again, if they present no username or other technical conflicts: http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

  You can try registering a new site with that address here.

  Note that if you add a custom domain for use with your blog, the original ‘wordpress.com’ domain/URL is never visible to your readers for as long as the custom domain is used on your blog.
