renaming category parent make all the categories disappears

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I have the same problem as this one:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/renaming-parent-category-messed-up-categories?replies=3

    My site: http://theillustratedwine.wordpress.com/

It looks like it was resolved by WordPress and NOT by the user.

ALSO, posts in the subcategories appear inside the parent category. Why?

The parent category is the “uncategorized” category renamed.

    Thank you,

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Zelda,

We’re taking a look at this now and will let you know when we have an update.

The posts displaying in the parent category is a side effect of the renaming process. We’re looking more in-depth now.

    I appreciate your patience. Thanks!

  • Hi Zelda,

Everything should be right again in the world for your categories.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything else we can do for you.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your continuing help!

We tried to rename the parent, “Grape Meditations” to “Zelda’s Posts”, in order for it to move itself alphabetically to the bottom of the page.

But then we had the same problem, which was that the other categories then disappeared even though we attached every category to the parent (named “Zelda’s Posts”).

    Thanks for your help, kraftbj!

  • Hey Zelda,

I can walk you through what I did to resolve this. The long and short of it is that the cause appears to be a caching issue on our end that we’re working on, but you can force the cache to reset to fix it.

    1. Rename the parent category to Zelda’s Post
    2. See all of the children categories disappear :-(
    3. Search Categories, using the search box to the upper right of the list of categories and search for one of your children categories (I used “drink”).
    4. Click Edit for the category that displays
    5. Click Save (ensure the parent category is listed correctly)
    6. All is right in the world again

Our apologies for the clunky workaround, but we’re working on it!

    Hi kraftbj,

We followed the instructions but it didn’t work.

So we have just left everything ‘as is’, showing no parent and no categories.

In effect, I have no blog (yikes) while WordPress works on the problem.

    Honestly, thanks for continuing help.

  • Hi Zelda,

All of the categories appeared when I loaded the category listing at https://theillustratedwine.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

I investigated further and updated this setting: https://theillustratedwine.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=theme_options to the Zelda’s Posts

If it still appears wrong, can you let me know and be as specific as possible (e.g. on the home page, I see ABC when I expect to see XYZ, or when on the post editor, I see…., etc)?

    Thanks for your patience :)

    Hi kraftbj,

OK, it appears to be functioning properly.

BUT, each time I publish a new post in each category in the future, I am going to change the quantity number in the category title. As in, “Drink This (click for 5 more here)” will have to changed shortly to “Drink This (click for 6 more here)”, etc, for EACH category.

Does that mean I will be required to update the ‘Primary’ (in this case, “Drink This”) category at each new publish for the ‘Primary’ setting? Or will the update be automatic?

    Thanks again!
    Zelda

  • Hi Zelda,

Ah, I see. That would be an issue, yes. If you change the category name at each publish, you would need to re-set that as well.

One suggestion is naming the category “Drink This (click for more here)” if you want to keep the call-to-action language there without having to always perform the extra step.

    Thanks!

    Hi kraftbj,

I’d prefer to continue renaming the quantity word (probably because the blog needs to function like an art portfolio and not a time-sensitive text blog). Can we rename it ourselves or do we need tech support in order to do it?

We need to go to “Theme Options” in Skylark theme to do that, correct?

    Thanks!
    Zelda

  • Hi Zelda,

You can continue to rename it youself, though you’ll need to do the extra step of going to Appearance->Theme Options to redeclare the primary category.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or need anything else!
