Renaming images to help blog traffic

Hi! What is the best way to change the name of an image already uploaded and in a post if I want to get the most hits on google? I was researching ways to increase blog traffic and one tip was to name your images with descriptive words, so want to go back and change the image titles for posts I have already written. Thanks!

Hi! Yes, I did change the picture title using that method, but it seemed that the URL attached to the picture didn’t automatically update. Will changing the title in this way help SEO at all? This article I read said it would if I used descriptive titles with dashes in-between my words. SO for example “butternut-squash-soup” versus “butternut squash soup.” The article said that when someone searches for something my images would come up if the titles were done in this way. New to this so not sure! I just read the guide you sent too. I am doing all those things to help SEO already! Yay! But it didn’t say anything about image titles.

The article refers to file titles (ending mostly on .jpg or .jpeg), not the titles of the images. A few more tips regarding images:
* Don’t use just one word (or words together) to name your image files
* Name/Describe the image well
* Uses dashes/hyphens not underscores or pluses, to separate the words * in the filename – (more details here from smart people) -
So if I go to media, then click on edit by an image, I should change the name in the first large box (where it says IMG_2644 for example) not the area that says caption, alternative text, or description? And this will help SEO a bit?

You can change the image title but the article referred to file titles (ending mostly on .jpg or .jpeg). You can only change these file titles on your computer, before you upload them to your blog. Filling in other details like image title and alternative text/description will help search engines to find your images better.

Great, thank you! Now I just need to find the time to go back and change/add all that info ;O) I will definitely change my file titles on my computer from here on out though.
