Renew registration and map OR host through WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m highly confused by all of the different options available to me through WordPress and the lack of support. Hopefully, someone here can help.

I have a domain registered and hosted through other another provider. I also have a free WordPress blog. I would like to keep the registered, custom domain name and have WordPress be the new platform for the website. I want to drop the hosting service.

To the best of my understanding, I have these options (with yearly fees):

    1) Keep renewing the domain name through the other provider to keep the name and maintain the free WordPress blog (up to $20 for re-registering domain name).

    2) Keep renewing the domain name through the other provider, map that domain to the WordPress blog, and maintain the free WordPress blog (up to $20 for domain name plus $8 WordPress fee for mapping).

    3) Renew the domain registration through WordPress and maintain a WordPress blog with my custom address. My xyz.wordpress.com address would, instead, become xyz.org ($18 for domain name plus $99 for the premium blog)

Am I understanding this correctly? With option #3, do I have to pay for mapping too?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.com provides free blogs and free hosting for them. WordPress.com does not accept domain name transfers but mapping to an existing domain can be done.

Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

    Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

This applies whether or not your purchase an individual domain mapping upgrade or a Premium bundle upgrade:

Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

There’s a $5 difference when mapping an existing domain under a Premium upgrade that Staff will adjust downward for you.

Thanks so much for the quick response!

You’re welcome and best wishes. :)

To clarify, we will need to
    1. register and renew our domains elsewhere (and purchase private registrations, if we want them, elsewhere), and
    2. map to our WordPress blog.

If we want to be able to have a forwarding email address with the customer name, is that possible?

    1. See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
Domain owners are required to share their contact information. The $8.00 Private Registration upgrade will protect your identity and hide your contact information.

    2. See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    3. WordPress.com does not provide an email service for any mapped domains. The options are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/

Thanks. I entered “modlook” as a tag. I hope that’s what you meant.

    For the next reader:

We want private registration. We’re just confused as to whether we buy it with the registrar or with WordPress.

And it sounds like, if we just buy the mapping service, that we won’t have the ability to receive emails from our blog. If we buy the premium upgrade, though, and we have a domain registered elsewhere…….we have no idea what we get.

You buy the Private Registration with the company that your domain name is Registered with

If you just buy the domain mapping – yes email does not come with that – but the links @TT gave you above explain how to have email with a custom domain name – no additional upgrade required – I have custom email with just domain mapping – some options for email cost some do not

Is your domain already registered somewhere? If yes, then you’ll need to add Private Registration through that registrar.

Email forwarding is automatically available for any domain that doesn’t have third party hosting set up. Here’s how you can set that up:
