  How can I have the $80 fee waived for renewing my domain? I had no idea this fee would accrue–my fault, obviously–and while I’d like to keep this address, I won’t be charged 4 times the amount to do so.

  When a domain expires we no longer own it the domain name. WordPress.COM cannot waive any redemption fees. They are set by the domain name registrar who can charge whatever they wish, and flog the name to whoever they want, or auction it off. That is why we renew prior to domain expiry.
