renewal

Hi
When i set up my account i set up an automatic direct debit payment. I have not blogged in a long time but I still hope to keep my domain name. I was only made aware that my domain year subscription had expired as a family member alerted me.
Now I am more than happy to renew it but I am very disappointed that wordpress didnt make an attempt to inform me that they were having problems with my renewal.
Can someone please justified why I am being charged a total of £80 when my usual renewal amount is around £25. I FIND THIS HIGHLY RIDICULOUS AND UNJUSTIFIABLE, especially as i have never missed payment, have a direct debit set up and received any emails regarding problems.
I am thinking of taking this matter higher up if i am not satisfied with your response.
I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi there,
It looks like the auto renewal tried to process on 8/7/14. However, the renewal failed. This could be due to a number of factors including insufficient funds, a change in billing address, etc.
You should have received expiration notices for your domain both leading up to your auto renewal and after the auto renewal failed. Can you search your Yahoo inbox to see if they perhaps landed in your spam folder? They would have come from WordPress.com. You should also have seen expiration notices on your blog dashboard.
Domain expiration is a lengthy and complicated process that takes about 80 days. During this time, your domain may be put up for auction or sold on back-order. You can learn more about expired domains here:
For a short time, the domain is still available for a regular renewal. However, after 18-20 days past the expiration date, a late renewal fee is added by the domain registrar. Unfortunately, this fee is imposed by the registrar and not one we can waive.
You can renew this domain and manage all your other upgrades under Store > My Upgrades in your dashboard.
If you do not want to pay the $80 late fee, you can opt to let your domain expire. Please note, in that case, it might be sold to someone else. However, if you want to go this route, please let me know, and I’m happy to provide you with more information!

Hi Jeremey
Thanks for your response.
Unfortunately i still find this answer unsatisfactory. There is always sufficient funds in my account. I have had no previous problem renewing my account in the past.
Secondly I have checked the email address associate with this account and there is no emails from wordpress. I would like to renewal my domain name but i do think that this is ridiculous that I am liable for the late fee especially as everything was in place and wordpress failed to notify me of any issue.

Hi,
I definitely understand your frustration, and I really apologize if you did not receive the email notices. I’m not aware of any reason they would not have been delivered during that timeframe. In addition to those email notices, we also presented Dashboard warnings on your blog to prevent this situation from occurring. As I mentioned before, your domain was still available for regular renewal up to 20 days past the expiration date.
At this point, we’re being charged the late fee by the domain registrar. This isn’t a fee that we have control of.
If you choose not to renew your domain, let me know. I can cancel it to help expedite the process of the domain becoming available again for purchase. However, please note, if I cancel the domain, I can’t guarantee the exact date it will become available again for registration. Additionally, someone may register it before you. In that case, you would lose the domain (we definitely don’t want that).
Please let me know if you have any additional questions regarding the domain or the expiration process!
