Renewal

Hello. My blog domain (tripoverfood.net) expired in June. When I decided to renew it today, and I clicked on the renew your domain button on the renewal email, it didn’t show any information about renewing the domain. It just said ‘Looking to upgrade?’. When I tried to buy the domain again, it said it was already taken, but when I typed in tripoverfood.net, it said it didn’t exist. What am I doing wrong?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Expired means what is says – over, dead, done, complete and that’s why we renew prior to expiration. Keep in mind that once your domain expires, it can be unavailable for up to 90 days. Once it goes back on the market, anyone can register it. You should never allow a domain to expire unless you are fully done with it and never want to use it again. Please see https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/ and note the redemption section.

If the domain is still available you can purchase it again. See: https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/

    We need details please.
    1. What is the domain URL?
    2. What is the underlying .wordpress.com URL?
    3. Exactly which username account registered the underlying .wordpress.com blog and purchased the upgrade for it?
    4. When was the upgrade purchased?
    5. When did the refund request and upgrade take place?

I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Please subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond and be patient while waiting. P.S. Are you logged in under the exact same username account that registered the underlying .WordPress.com site and purchased the upgrade for it? That’s required in order to renew the existing upgrades. If you are not logged in under the correct username account clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies and then login under the correct username account.

Thanks for providing details for Staff who will follow up as soon as they can.

  • Hey there,

I checked and noticed that tripoverfood.net is now in a redemption period. You can still renew your domain through us, but it is now a more expensive and complicated process to do so. Our registrar charges an $80 late renewal fee in addition to the $26 we charge to renew the domain. The good news is that this is still a chance of reclaiming the domain through this option.

Your other option is to wait until the redemption period is over so that the domain becomes available for registration again. Domains are usually in redemption for approximately 80 days, but with this option, you run
the risk of someone else jumping in front of you to purchase the domain before you get the chance.

Please let me know if you want to proceed with paying the late renewal fee in the attempt to reclaim the domain name. This option is also time sensitive because the domain can be auctioned off to an expired domain bidder.

I would suggest enabling the auto-renew option so that you will not have to worry about losing control over your domain in the future.

I’m sorry, $80? Can you please clarify why it costs 80 dollars to renew a website, meaning $106 in total?

  • Hi there,

The domain expired on 6/27/16. We have a grace period for about 10 days to two weeks. During this short window, the domain can be renewed at the regular price.

After the grace period ends, your domain enters the redemption period, the length of which can vary. This means the domain name can still be renewed, but there is an $80.00 redemption fee required in addition to the normal renewal cost. (This is standard practice for domain registrars.)

    Domain Expiration

Your domain has been expired for almost 75 days. At this point, it may be released within next few weeks, but we do not exactly when. You can wait and risk the chance of someone else registering the domain or you can pay more and retrieve the domain out of redemption.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

So when the domain expires, I can buy it again for $20?

  • Yes, once the domain is released by the registry, you can buy it for $18. The only stipulation is that there are others who can register it as well – so I’d be vigilant in consistently checking on the site status over the next few weeks.

There are those who purposefully register sites so that they can resell to those who want the site at a ridiculous price.

    Thanks,
