Renewal date for registered domain appears to be 1 month too early

I just registered a domain name with wordpress.com. I registered yesterday (April 5), but in my account it says that it “renews on March 7, 2015”. This isn’t a year; it’s 11 months. What happened to the extra month?

In the help, it says “When you registered your domain (e.g. yourgroovydomain.com) with WordPress.com, you purchased the right to use that domain name for a year.” According to my count, the renewal should be April 4, not March 7. What am I not understanding? I read about the grace period, but this doesn’t seem to be the issue.

  • That date is the date that the auto-renewal will be run. The domain does not actually expire until a month after that.

We auto renew domains 30 days before their expiration date. Why? Since letting a domain expire means you may not be able to get it back in the future, we want to ensure that everything is taken care of in advance. We do send out notification emails before charging your card, as we try not to surprise anyone. This is mentioned in the “my upgrades” support document and when you set up your auto-renewal. But it can also be easy to miss, so I understand the confusion.

You can turn off auto-renew from the “My Upgrades” page:
