i dont’ want to pay a renewal fee. I was only overdue a few weeks. Is there a way to renew sans the 80$ fee?

WordPress.com does not set the redemption fee the registrar does. We are sent multiple reminders so we don’t let our domains expire and we don’t face redemption fees.

When you do not renew a domain prior to it expiring and it expires it no longer belongs to you. It belongs to the registrar you bought it from and they can set whatever redemption fee they want to set. You either pay it or you don’t get the domain back.

  • What TimeThief has told you is correct.

I understand your frustration, but there is nothing we can do about the late fee. It is imposed on us by our registrar (and is standard practice for every registrar that I am familiar with). You can find more info on domain expiration here:

We strongly encourage users to set up auto renewal to avoid this sort of issue. But even if auto-renewal is not an option, we send multiple emails alerting users of domain expiration and put alert notices on the blog dashboard when users log in.

If the domain is important to you, I highly suggest paying the late fee and renewing as soon as possible. You can choose to wait out the expiration process and let the domain be released to the public marketplace again. But there is also the very real possibility that domain squatters or someone who simply wants the name will grab it before you do.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any questions.
