Renewing Contract

  • Unknown's avatar

I am having difficulty renewing my contract. I received emails saying that my domain was going to expire.. and to renew it would be $18. I just recently had a baby and haven’t had the time to keep up with my emails and renewal. I use squarespace for my website and use wordpress for my domain. My website is currently disabled Im guessing because I didn’t renew my domain. What do I need to do to renew for the year at $18. I would like my website back up and running as quickly as possible due to the cliental I work with. Thank you!

    Hello heidivazquez,

Please provide the domain name that has expired.

After your domain name expires there is a grace period which last between ten days and two weeks. You are able to renew your domain within that time at the regular price.

Once the grace period has ended your domain will go into a redemption period. Your domain name can still be purchased at that time, but there will be an additional $80 added to the cost of the domain. During redemption your domain can go up for auction, if it is auction off, you will not be able to repurchase the domain.

If you domain name makes it through the redemption period without being auctioned or you renewing it, the name will be available again for anyone to purchase.

You can get more details of what happens to an expired domain here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/

I have tagged this post with ‘modlook’ so that a staff member of WordPress.com can assist you.

Why can’t these things be simpler. The domain I had was heidivazquez.com. How long is the redemption period? I just need to know what I need to do next? Can I set up that domain through another provider?

    Hi heidivazquez,

I do apologize that this a difficult process.

The redemption period can vary. The domain will not be available for purchase through any provider until after the redemption period has passed. Once it is released it is then purchased on a first come basis.

A Happiness Engineer will be able to take a look to see the current status of your domain name.

I would recommend that once your domain is up and running again, you turn on the auto-renew feature: https://en.support.wordpress.com/manage-purchases/

Congratulation on the little one, forgot to mention it earlier.

    Hi Tassy,
How will I know when that redemption period has passed? Will I be notified somehow? I would like to keep my domain and repurchase it.
What are my next steps to ensure that? Is there a way to be notified once it is available?
    Thank you!

    Hi heidivazquez,

No you would not be notified, WordPress.com actually does not receive a notification of this. Staff members will be able to check on the status for you and if it is still in the redemption stage attempt to have it redeemed.

If it is that you do not want to attempt to get it back from the redemption period, random checks will just have to be made to see if it has been release. It can however take up to 90 days for it to be released.

Wow.. Nothing against you but that is not very helpful for me.
My website is currently down so in order for me to get it back up I have to either wait or change my domain name. That is pretty frustrating.
Thank you for addressing the issue. I guess I will look for other options in order to get my website back up.

    Hi heidivazquez,

I do understand what you are saying.

A staff member of WordPress.com will be able to provide you with more details, as they will be able to see the status of the domain.

I am sure someone will address this shortly.

  • Hi –

    Congrats on the little one!

When a domain expires it will enter in to the redemption period. The good news is that we can still try to recover your domain with the help of our domain partner. To do that they charge an $80 fee. Before we proceed with redemption I need to verify that you’ll agree to that payment. This fee does not come from WordPress.com so I can’t waive it.

Unfortunately, there are not any notifications sent out when a domain finishes up in redemption and becomes available again. Typically it takes about 80 days. If you don’t want to proceed with the redemption process you can wait it out.

My suggestion is to try and register your domain every day until it becomes available. The risk with this, is that someone else will get to it first. In that case, there’s nothing anyone can do to help you regain ownership of the domain.

This is why I suggest the first option for getting the domain back.

Let me know if you agree to the redemption payment and I’ll get the process started right away. Typically it only takes 2-3 days to hear back about the domain. I will also send an email your way with a secure payment link.
