Renewing expired domain

  I let my domain address expire by a month. Bummer. When I type in my domain address, there isn’t a website or anything that comes up, but within the WordPress dashboard my former domain is no longer available. How can I solve this? It seems to me that if there isn’t a website using my domain, then it should still be available for me? Please help!
