Reordering Slideshow Items
-
The manner in which images in a slideshow is managed seems to have changed to something almost unuseable.
Previously to edit the slideshow images a list of already selected images would be shown. This could be ordered/reodrered by dragging and dropping items. Items could also be easily added to this ‘filtered’ list and reordered easily.
Now it seems to be when editing slideshow images I am presented with a list of my whole media library which will have the selected items shown only as I scroll down many, many pages – it is like finding needles in a haystack. I have hundreds of images in my media library and a slideshow may contain 8 items which occur throughout this list. There does not to be a way of filtering this list easily to only see the items that have previously been selected to make this a manageable interface.
The previous way of managing images in slideshows was absolutely excellent. I can’t understand how this new method could have been introduced. Maybe I am missing something? Is there a way of managing my slideshow items in the new implementation that makes it easy to see my selected items without scrolling through pages and pages and pages. I can’t seem to be able to find a filter function. Is the only way to insert a new item into the middle of the slideshow to deselect all the items that come after the new one I want to add, then add the new item, then try and find all the items i had previously selected and then reselect them in the right order scrolling through pages and pages to be able to do this?
Any help with this would be appreciated.

@herveybayart Hi there, thank you for providing the site’s URL.
The blog I need help with is herveybayartsociety.org.auIn the site you provided, seems that the Jetpack slideshow block is in use.
Have you already reviewed the following document about its functionality?Because I have tried to replicate the issue on a test installation and its functionality is as expected.
Hope this helps, let us know how It goes!

Thanks for responding so promptly.
No this doesn’t help at all. I don’t think you have understood the issue I was trying to relate.
The link you sent me https://jetpack.com/support/jetpack-blocks/slideshow-block/ does explain the slideshow block but doesn’t address my issue. This link shows a media library with a total of 4 entries only!! and then they are all selected to be in the slideshow. Obviously it is just a simple example given but my issue is when the media library has hundreds of entries and the ones required for the slideshow are spread right across the media library.
It seems to me that the slideshow block works as documented – my point is that when a slideshow consists of a few items (e.g. 8) from a media library – out of hundreds and hundreds that exist in the media library – it is just not manageable to easily add/subtract/reorder items because instead of being able to operate with just a list of items selected to be in the slideshow (as was the case in the previous release) – now you have to deal ALL the items in the media library displayed – and the ones selected are indicated with a little number on them – this makes them are needles in a haystack.
I hope I have communicated my issue in an understandable way. You say you have a test installation to test this on. To see what my problem is I would suggest you do the following with your test installation:
1 In the test installation load at least 500 pictures file into the media library (or better yet use an existing one that has hundreds of pictures).
2 Create a slideshow block of 8 items – using picture 56, 184, 236, 255, 301, 320, 406, 480 from the media library.
3 Save and test that slideshow.
4 now to the same test installation upload a new picture to the media library then make this picture the 5th picture to display in the slideshow. Then remove the picture from the slideshow that was previously in the 5th position. This is exactly what I need to do approximately every 2 weeks as exhibitions change.
If the issue that I am trying to address is not clear from my description of it – or from you setting up the test harness the way I have suggested – is there an email address I could send my issue to or some other more visual way of communicating my issue? – I could then show step by step what I mean with a series of screen shots.

I have went back and retested my slideshows and it seems to be working as it did previously.
Yesterday, when I edited slideshows I would never get to the ‘EDIT GALLERY’ screen that displays selected items and allows easy reordering and adding/subtraction of items. I was always being sent to a different screen that showed all media items that then had the display order number of the slideshow item displayed on top of the gallery item but all the gallery was displayed. I showed this to a colleague so I know i am not going crazy. But the functionality seems to have reverted back – whatever caused it I don’t really care as long as it keeps working.
So I will happily mark this off as resolved.

@herveybayart I see.
1st key point
Before uploading any photo to your media library you should use descriptive names -without allowing this statement to imply that you do not already.
This makes the files easier to manage, especially with such a large library.
https://wordpress.com/support/media/#add-files-from-your-computer2nd key point
I read what you’re describing in step number 4, but I would suggest uploading/adding new photos directly from editing said slideshow instead.
Have you tried this so far? Also, just to clarify, your issue has absolutely nothing to do with how many search results a search in your media library returns, like described in the forum thread below, correct?
