replace a contents page
-
My site – The Australian Telegraph Office – opens to the welcome page and then click below pic to please enter.
This is the contents page and I wish to change it with a new page.
I have no trouble with anything else, but cannot upload a new contents page and have it placed correctly. Help much appreciated. Thanks … RonThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Ron,
The “Please Enter” link on the welcome page has the link URL https://australiantelegraph.wordpress.com/contents/. However, that page evidently doesn’t exist (or is not published). But instead a page not found error, for some reason WordPress.com instead redirects to the “Content 01” page, which has the URL https://australiantelegraph.wordpress.com/contents-01contents-01/.
To correct this error, all that’s necessary is publish the page that you want to replace that page with, and to provide the correct link URL in the “Please Enter” link.

Thanks, but I’m still in trouble. This has been happening all the time.
I have deleted the old contents file from the wp section where all files are stored, and uploaded a new contents page file.
When I click ‘insert’ the title of the new file comes up on the top left of the contents page in blue and correctly opens the new file which of course is not on the site.
However, whenever I replace any other page in the site the file name comes up above the list of files and I simply cut and paste the entry into the position in the list which I want it – no problems. Have done it this way for years.
With the new contents file it comes up in the same manner, but when uploaded and ‘go to site’ the original contents file (now a mess) which I imagine should have been deleted previously, comes up.
I wonder if I should cut and paste the new contents file from its original landing position (as for all other files), but to where?
The site was set up for me years ago when I knew nothing about sites and appears to have been done by creating squares or boxes into which data is inserted – this is why the current page is a mess as I can’t completely get my head around it. I have never before had reason to change the contents page.
Thanks .. Ron -
Hi there,
Where exactly do you want that link to go? The Welcome To page is the only published page on your site, so there is currently nowhere else you could be linking to.
I’m also not clear what you’re referring to by the “contents file”. WordPress.com doesn’t use files, except for image files in the media library. Content on a WordPress.com site exists in the form of posts and pages, not files.
There are two untitled posts published on your site. If you want to link to a page listing those posts, you first have to publish a new blank page on the site, and then set that page as your posts page. See:
Once you’ve done that, you can then replace the “Please Enter” link with the link for your new posts page.

I think Ron’s second post might be referring to PDF files, and to creating download links to them in a page. The page https://australiantelegraph.wordpress.com/contents-01contents-01/ which was published when I first visited the site had lots of links to PDF files.

There were only two pdf pages on the site – ‘Welcome’ and ‘Contents’. Both appear to me to have been in file format.
From ‘Contents’ were links to all the other files on the site – no problems – worked fine.
The ‘contents’ file has now gone. I have gone to the dashboard, to ‘add new page’ and I assumed that a new ‘contents’ page which I have already created in docx and then to pdf could be inserted, but it appears that a new page has to be created in wordpress itself.
I imagined adding a page was a similar exercise to uploading the files which are brought up by links on individual entries on the contents list.
The new ‘contents’ file I have already created as a pdf is stored in the wp section from which other files are inserted.
Hope this makes sense … Ron -
PDFs are documents, they cannot on their own be pages here.
With that said, they can be _inserted_ into pages, but the pages do need to be created in WordPress first: https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/file-block/

Ron,
If you sent the old ‘Contents’ page to Trash, but haven’t deleted it yet, then you should be able to access it here: https://wordpress.com/pages/trashed (when you’re logged into the account), and restore it as described in the Restoring from Trash section of the Trash support page.
If it hasn’t been trashed or deleted, then perhaps it’s in draft status. If so, then you’ll find it here: https://wordpress.com/pages/drafts, and you may simply change it’s status back to published at any time.

Ron I can see several contents PDFs in your media library.
I did notice though that those PDFs contain incorrect links. It’s almost like you’ve got a website made out of PDFs and now the directory has changed so now all the PDFs need to be updated to the correct links.
Does that sound accurate?
If so, have you thought about using the content from the PDFs to make a website instead, so that the links can be more easily managed and what not?

I appreciate all the advice, but I seem to be getting nowhere. As an 88 year old I am now bamboozled.
e.g. I need three boxes across the top of the new page I am trying to create. However I can’t move them or resize them. Instructions as to how to do this do not work.
I think I’ll give up and lose what was considered a very good site..
Cheers … Ron
