Replace domain with existing WordPress Premium Plan?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
    Does anyone know how I would go about replacing a domain name? I would like to shorten my domain from zacharynlu.com to zachlu.com.

    I’m currently subscribed to WordPress Premium which includes a registered domain. Is there a way to change the domain associated with that plan?

    To be clear, instead of paying $99 for WordPress Premium and an additional $18 for another domain name, can I just change the domain name associated with my premium plan for a one time $18 charge and it will be included with the $99 I pay each year?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    @zacharynlu

    Custom domains, like zacharynlu.com, can’t be changed. However, you can add a new custom domain to your site here:

    https://zacharynlu.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

    Register a New Domain

    Also, if you no longer need zacharynlu.com, I can cancel it for you.

    Before I proceed, there are a few points I need to cover.

    If we cancel your domain, it can take up to several weeks for our domain registrar to release the domain, and we can’t guarantee that your domain will be available to you again, once canceled.

    If you want to keep using your domain, but you don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore, you don’t have to cancel it. Instead, you can move the domain to another site, using the Domain Administration tool under Store > Domains, at the bottom of the page.

    For more information on using the domain elsewhere, please see:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/

    Once you confirm how you’d like to proceed, I will get started processing your transaction.

    Thanks for the reply! But what I trying to see possible is if I can cancel the current domain and register a new one associated with my WordPress Premium account, so every year when I renew with WordPress Premium, the new domain will be included with it (obviously, I understand that there will probably be a nominal fee for registering a new domain)?

    You don’t want to cancel the old name – you DO want to register and domain map the NEW name to the blog and set the new name to Primary

    If you cancel the old domain name your site will drop off the search engines – with the old name still active but not primary visitors will still get to the proper site

    I don’t think you would need site redirect for the old domain name – you could probably just let the old domain name expire naturally at the end of the year

    @pmciano should be able to transfer upgrades around so you still have a nice clean renewal all in one package and he can double check my suggestions

    I’d add that you might want to keep the zacharynlu.com domain name even if you no longer use it. Any links made elsewhere to your content won’t automatically update to your new domain name, so some would inevitably become broken even though the content still exists. You might want to use the site redirect option to move visitors from your zacharynlu.com site to zachlu.com.

    Wow I took a long time writing that; auxclass’s post wasn’t there when I started. Auxclass might be right about not needing the site redirect; I think it depends on if you have links elsewhere (yours or someone else’s) going to your old domain and how much you care about those old links working.

    You can have more than one domain name mapped to the same blog – but only one domain name can be Primary. The old domain name links should still work with visitors going to the correct place. You have an odd request and that is why I have suggested @pmciano weigh in

    How long the old domain name should be kept I am not sure of and depends on how many sites link to your blog – search engines will tend to learn about the new domain name, but a link on another site tends to not be updated – when I moved a few years ago I went to a couple of sites and told them about the new address and they updated their links – but finding the incoming links can take some detective work

    @zacharynlu

    I can cancel zacharynlu.com and when you register a new domain, I can associate it with your existing WordPress.com Premium Plan.

    As our other forum contributors have noted, if I cancel zacharynlu.com, any links on the Web using this address will no longer point to your content at zacharynlu.wordpress.com.

    If this is OK and you’d like me to cancel zacharynlu.com, regardless, let me know, and I will proceed.

    Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it.

    Looking at all your suggestions, I’m pretty convinced now that it would be best for the time being to retain the current, old domain and simply register a new domain and make it the primary domain.

    Also in the future, as I continue cycling out zacharynlu.com to zachlu.com, would it be wise to get around to fully cancelling the old domain and keeping the new one without any trouble?

    Thanks again for all your help!

    If there are a significant number of valuable links that utilize the older address, it might be in your best interest to retain control of zacharynlu.com.
