Replace New Block Editor with Classic for non-paid members?
-
Hello, I have a free account with WordPress. I would like to use the Classic Editor instead of the Block editor as I need to use a series of images inserted at one go. I cannot do that with block editor – I need to insert them one by one (sometimes as many as 15 – 20 images). It’s wasting my time.
Is there a way I can use Classic Editor without having to become a paid member and install the Classic Editor plugin? -
Hi there,
The classic editor in My Sites has been removed from WordPress.com – the code for that editor has been deleted from our codebase. It is not possible to switch back to it as it no longer exists.
That said, what you describe is possible using the gallery block in the block editor. Just set the gallery to display images in a single column.
You can also simply drag-and-drop the images from Finder into the editor, and they should all upload and get inserted underneath one another automatically, just like it worked in the classic editor.

Hey Kokkieh, thanks for letting me know. I did some reading up on the forum and also used the Classic Block to help me edit and format text like I used to.
But I encountered more issues like:
1. I can’t edit the image size itself once I’ve inserted it, since the ‘-‘ & ‘+’ shortcuts are no longer provided. I manually do it, and am having a tough time maintaining uniformity
2. The editing / new post page takes longer to load
3. The blocks occasionally disappear and reappearMy current blog is 5 years old, but I’m using WordPress since 2008 for personal blogging. Of all the updates and revisions, the Block Editor has been the most confusing. (I loved the new dashboard when it was introduced, it helped me save a lot of my time.)
The Block Editor is not user-intuitive. It expects a lot of users across comfort levels with technology and online editing to learn a lot of new tricks, but at the cost of their time and having to resort to Forums more than ever. Just putting this out here if the development team is looking for feedback to fine-tune the Block Editor.
I put in a lot of effort in creating the content I do. Now to also spend as much time trying to format, post and learn feels illogical. Mine is a personal hobby / book review site which I find time to do amidst my work. I’m neither a paid user nor a wildly famous one :)
I’m not expecting any further help, as I’ve migrated to Medium.
While I’m here, I’d like to sincerely applaud the WordPress Support Forum staff and members, as well as the department that handles themes. I will miss having a beautiful theme, as well as the support you guys provide.
