Replace PDF in media library, retain name
-
Hello,
I uploaded a PDF to my site and provided the link on a resume. The PDF is now out of date and needs to be replaced, but I need it to retain the same name so that my resume link continues to work. I deleted the original PDF, but with each re-upload, WordPress re-names the file by appending a number to the end of the name.
Can you help by clearing my cache so I can re-upload with the same name?
The original link (now deleted) that needs to be cleared from the cache is:

hi,
I have tagged modlook for a Staff to help you with this.
Thank you for your patience while they get back to you. -
Hi there,
This has nothing to do with your site cache, and everything to do with how file uploads on WordPress.com works. It is not possible to replace a media file with a new file at exactly the same URL on WordPress.com.

Hi there, If you are going to be revising your PDF files, it might be better to upload them to an online storage service like box, dropbox and the like, and then link to them instead. That way the file will be updated, but the link itself will remain the same. This also has the benefit of keeping your PDF file out of search engine caches, which can be an issue for some.
Hope that helps somewhat.

@justjennifer is correct – there’s no great way to replace the file here. But a dropbox link can be updated.
Or, you could put the PDF on one page of your site, and give people a link to that page instead of to the file directly.
