Replacing current Dreamweaver sites with WordPress sites

I manage 4 different websites, 3 of which I built myself (albeit not tremendously well) in Dreamweaver many years ago. The fourth is a WordPress website that was built by a friend’s friend and turned over to me with instructions as to how to manage it. I am hanging by a thread with the Dreamweaver sites because of the lack of support and compatibility of it with updated operating systems, so I am looking to build WordPress sites to replace them.
All 4 sites are currently hosted by BlueHost. I have signed up for the Create Your Site course, but I am unsure how I build a site through WordPress via the course if I already have a hosting service with functional websites. Do I just use the course for a practice site and then go through BlueHost to try to build the new ones, or build a site on WordPress.com and then transfer it to BlueHost (3 different times)?
The world of website management is a bit of a black box to me in many ways so I feel a little over my head in trying all of this. Any suggestions that would help me navigate this would be appreciated.

  • Hey there! These forums and our tutorials are primarily for the sites we hosted on our services, but you’d be welcome to use our tutorials to the extent that they apply to your sites.

    Given this:

The world of website management is a bit of a black box to me in many ways so I feel a little over my head in trying all of this. Any suggestions that would help me navigate this would be appreciated.

Can I recommend starting the sites here on our services, then cutting each one over to a live site as you go?

You would need a plan for each separate site, but note that includes hosting as well as our maintenance, security, and direct support, as well as backups if your site will be using outside code. So if you don’t mind reworking the look and feel of the sites, here’s what I’d recommend:

    1. Start the first site here: https://wordpress.com/start
    2. You should be guided to choose a layout, then you can copy and paste your content into it, or you can go to https://wordpress.com/page for the new site, and work with patterns to get a look you like: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/block-pattern/
    3. Repeat for each page of the site.
    4. Once you’ve got everything working for that first site, connect the domain to make it live: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/

Then you can repeat for the next site, and so on. If you have a paid plan, you’ll have direct support along the way, or you’re welcome to ask here. Let us know how we can help!

Or, if you prefer to stay with your existing host, ask them what recommendations they have for setting up staging on their services.

    I hope this helps!
