Replacing GoDaddy domain with WordPress instead of mapping

I’m working with someone who already owns their domain name through GoDaddy and uses their ‘Site Builder’ tool. We’re putting together a WordPress site, and we’d like to know if it’s possible to also use the same domain with WordPress instead. They’re currently paying GoDaddy for hosting and domain, so it’d be ideal to instead upgrade to a Personal WordPress account and get the domain through them.
Is this possible?

Aloha giraffesaurusrex, WordPress.com does not currently accept domain transfers. You can still use the domain on WordPress.com with the Personal plan by mapping an existing domain.

The site I’m working on is for someone who already owns a domain through GoDaddy. I’m wondering if the can cancel their GoDaddy account completely and upgrade to a Personal WordPress account, using WordPress for not only the built site itself but also their domain (the same domain name they own through GoDaddy).

Hosting and Domain registration are different. You would be able to cancel the GoDaddy hosting account, keep the domain hosted with GoDaddy, and update their DNS records to point to WordPress.com nameservers.
There would be no way to transfer the domain to WordPress.com; it would need to be mapped.
I do this with most of my domains. I register them all with the same registrar (domain name seller), then point them to the host’s nameservers.
