Replacing old site with new WordPress site

Hi there, my company currently has a website that was built several years ago by an outside firm. They did it in WordPress Bakery which is not very user-friendly and as the administrator, I’m unable to easily use its functionality. I would like to build us a new site using basic WordPress that I can easily manage, update, edit, and maintain. When going into WordPress, it asks for a domain (or asks if we have an existing domain). How do I build and experiment with different templates and designs without having it tied to the domain? I don’t want anything to be live yet – I want to be able to work on the site behind the scenes. How do I go about doing this?

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

    Hello there,

Well, You can start for free here: https://wordpress.com/start/free/?ref=pricing-lp

For feature-based requirements (like specific themes, plugins), you can purchase WordPress paid plans with a 14-day refund window, which means you must cancel it within 14 days of purchasing the plan if you have changed your mind.

Find out more here on refund policy: https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/#refund-policy

    Hope this helps! :)

Thank you – However, I still don’t understand how I am able to work on a new site in the background while not affecting our current site because before I seem to be able to do anything, it asks for me to enter the domain name and then WordPress will connect to it and switch it over to them. This makes me very nervous because it sounds as though it will be impacting our current site’s domain before I’m ready. It could take me weeks to build a new site so I need our current site to remain functional before I replace it.

    Hello again,

Right now, you do not need to connect your site.
You can begin working on the WordPress.com site, and once you are ready, you can connect your existing site to WordPress.com. This way, your old site will still function.

    :)
