Reply to individual comments
-
I’ve been searching the posts, but can’t seem to find an answer.
I have 2 new comments to my post, and I want to reply to each of them individually in the comments section.
When I view the Comments category on my Dashboard, I have the following options: [ Edit | Delete | Unapprove | Approve | Spam ]. I don’t have a Reply option, which is what I would expect.
I don’t mean a mailto: link, but an inline reply that appears as a threaded comment in the Comments section.
For example:Comment A
Reply to Comment A
Comment B
Reply to Comment BHow do I do this?

Not with the setup we have here. It’s doable with a plugin and theme support but staff hasn’t installed it.
You can try suggesting this feature via feedback but it would require rewriting the themes to support it.

I always just reply using their name as the first word in a comment, then a colon, then the reply. People figure it out immediately. And it means that people read more of your comments than just the bits that apply to them.

i do raincoaster’s tip too, except that i type my name when inserting my comment by editing my reader’s comment, and bold my comment to differentiate them.

These are two ways I do it
@ Alice
yada yada yada
@Betty
yada yada yadaor like sulz does
Reply: yada yada yadaHowever, I’m not clear if the blogger who posted this thread knows that one can simply type into the comment boxes on the front of his or her blog just as his or her readers do. If replying as an “edit” from the admin section for Comments on the back of the blog is a preference – fine. But that’s not the usual way. The usual way is to type in comment boxes on the front of your blog just as your readers do and to use as many comment boxes as you want to, to do that.

Another way some people do it is editing the comment and directly putting a reply in italics.
I only do that for posts with 90+ comments, most of the time I use the same method TT and RC.

To add to engtech’s comment, I use blockquote myself. Just seems to look better to me. *shrug*

Dr. Mike,
Two questions here. How do I separate one post from the preceding post by placing a comment section in between so that when ever a person gets to the end of reading a post–whalla–a place to post a comment. I have all the boxes unchecked to allow this to occur. I just do not know how to set this situation up on my blog.Second question: I have decided to have a pen name, which is not my real name. I have changed that in the User section by editing and replacing my real name with my pen name. The pen name is not connected to my email address. Is that going to create any problems with receiving mail, via (email visible only to moderators and staff)? If not I will just leave it as so and continue to identify myself with the pen name.
Thanks for your time and help. Have a great day.

The position your comments are displayed in is dependent upon the theme you are using and the way the theme designer coded it to display comments. Theme I see you have chosen is Andreas 4 and it is displaying comments exactly as the designer coded it to do. Using your post “So You think You are Alone” I see that I can click on “2 comments” and they then display below the post.

Under “why must my email address be unique? ” in the FAQs we find this thread. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/12/19/why-must-my-e-mail-address-be-unique/

Time thief,
Thanks for your imput. I think I will add something to my Home area of my site to instruct my readers how to leave a comment if they chose to. resolved. Thanks.Secondly, I am not suggesting changing my email address. I was curious about placing my pen name in my name section of that page. I want to do this so if anyone gets into my administration section, they will see my pen name and not my real name.
Thanks again my friend. Have a great day.

Although you’re free to use a pen name I think I should mention that whenever you leave a comment on a wordpress.com blog your username will appear, and not the pen name. Best wishes. :)

SC, best bet for the personal information is to visit your Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile page and remove what you don’t want in there.
Hope this helps,

I think replying to people in a separate comment is better because that way people can track answers to their comments if they use comments feed and they can also know that there is new comment if you use recent comments widget.
-
Secondchance: it says Resolved because the original thread poster’s question was resolved. That’s under the control of the original poster, and not related to subsequent questions.
-
Also for reference, staff has stated that we’re not getting wp.com email account tied to our sites here. Even I don’t get one. (Not that I would want yet another email account anyway.)
Do note that some folks actually edit the commenter’s comment and put their reply directly into the comment, usually in bold text to offset it from the original. That may be something to think about.
Hope this helps,

Thanks guys. So much information. So little time. You all are the best.
Have a great weekend.
