The above is what I get when I write a comment.

When I click to write a comment I get a whole different way to respond. It’s like I am a different person. I know I must have done something somewhere/sometime to create the mess, but I don’t know what.

Thanks for reading and helping me remove the offending text in my comments.

This might help explain what my problem is and help correct the mistake.

WordPress.com recently updated the comment feature and apparently that is why you are seeing this when you want to comment:

Have you tried replying directly from within the Comment dashboard?

Regardless, I’ve also flagged your thread for Staff assistance on how to remove this extra text appearing in every comment on your site.

  • Hey there,

The Reply <span>↓</span> text is due to a compatibility issue with the theme Bold Life and WordPress. Since this theme is retired, it is very unlikely that it will be updated to fix the error. There are two solutions I would recommend.

First, you could update to a new theme that is compatible with the current version of WordPress. You could also choose a Full Site Editing theme, which would give you more flexibility over the look and feel of your site.

Using the Site Editor, you can design everything on your site — from the header right down to the footer — using blocks. This guide will show you around the editor. If you do not see Editor here, your theme does not supp

Second, it may also be possible to remove the text using custom CSS. However, this would require a site upgrade as additional CSS is not supported on the free plan.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any questions about the above solutions.

Thanks for replying and looking into my problem. I have used Bold Life since I started blogging in July of 2012 …. (on another blog). It suits me fine. I’ sorry it has been retired. I’m afraid if I change themes it might alter the way I want my pages to look. So I guess I’m stuck with what I have. The post looks OK. It was only the comment part that looked …. well … ugly. But it didn’t stop others from commenting. :)

I’m afraid to start fiddling with any of the settings etc. I don’t know …. if I tested another theme or two …. if I would be able to return to Bold Life?

    Thank you.

Once you switch to a different theme, you won’t be able to go back to the retired theme. If you like that theme so much, you can continue using it for as long as you like. However, if you want to take advantage of the newer features of WordPress, you’ll eventually have to switch to a newer theme.

If I change my theme of Bold Life it will be to Theme: Jaida. It seems the best for my simple blog.
When I select activate I understand that Bold Life will disappear forever! What I want to know is will all of my blog entries still be there from day one of my blogging since 2013? Will my posts automatically assume the style of Jaida? Or will I need to do some editing etc to get my previous entries looking OK? I will understand if there is something I need to do, I just want to be prepared for it. Unfortunately I won’t be doing any upgrading, but hope to use the Block Editor more efficiently and will look forward to using some new features.

Thank you for your helpful replies.

  • Hi there,

Absolutely. If you update your theme, all of your content will remain intact. The only thing that changes is the site design. Once you activate your theme, you might need to do a few things for it to look like the demo, but we’d be happy to assist you. The main thing you’ll want to do is ensure that each of your posts has featured images attached. That allows your site to have a similar design to the demo.

Hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you!

“The main thing you’ll want to do is ensure that each of your posts has featured images attached.”

Oh dear! I have never set a featured image to any of my posts. I see it in the Block Editor and never understood what it was for and all my posts went through so I just ignored it. I did go back to an old post and went through your directions and just chose the graphic that went with the post. I saw no change/or didn’t know what I was looking for.

So, there is no way I could go back and set a featured image to all of my posts and live to change to a new theme. lol

By my questions and interest you can tell I am sincere. But after studying and thinking I came to the conclusion that I best stay with Bold Life and be safe. The problem was that <span> thing in the comments that was imo ugly. If it was incompatible with Bold Life theme, is everyone that has Bold Life seeing the same thing? I think I follow some having the theme but haven’t notice anything in the comments.

But I guess if it doesn’t bother the commenters, it shouldn’t bother me.

I am concerned about the ‘featured image’. Does it appear somewhere in the post? I can now start adding one to each new draft but it would be one that was on the post page. I just don’t know what it is for!! And I can go back and add one to each post of years back a little at a time. (I like looking at my posts) When I read the word ‘featured’ I think it is to be visible.

Thanks in advance for clearing up the concept of featured image.

is everyone that has Bold Life seeing the same thing?

I looked at other forum threads tagged “Bold Life” and of the 10 sites I checked, only one was still available and, yes, it also had that <span> tag displaying next to Reply in the comments.

I am concerned about the ‘featured image’. Does it appear somewhere in the post?

It’s really theme dependent. Not all themes display a featured image and some themes have the option of automagically using the first large-ish image in your post. The featured image is also the preferred image used if you Publicize your posts to social media (facebook and X and such). You can learn more about Featured images by clicking on the link that @staff-doublebassd gave you.

Hope that helped answer some questions.

Hello!! Unrelated but I would appreciate a prompt respond bc I might go crazy otherwise. I have finished and published my website. But the published website looks like I just started! No widgets, graphics, nothing, just a few sentences and that’s it. I’ve tried updating the WordPress, googled through and through. Using classic Hello elementor theme. Thank you!!

  • Hi there @knorovami

Since this is a different issue from the one in the original post, could you start a new topic here? https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

You can add a “modlook” tag if you’d like to get staff attention.

That way the people who have been working on this topic won’t get unwanted notifications as we troubleshoot your issue. Thanks!
