Reporting a Psycho’s Comments

There’s a goofball who keeps posting on my blog, claiming that he’s looking up my location, and is going to confront me face-to-face. I continuously mark his comments as spam, but now he’s getting over the line. Though, I’m not afraid of him, because I know he’ll never find me, but I am getting annoyed that he’s ruining my blog. Is there anyway I can report a specific IP to WordPress so they can block him from visiting? What can I do here?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can block comments by name, IP, or keyword. On your dashboard, go to Settings> Discussion. Put the terms you want blocked in either the moderation or the blacklist box.

It’s worth putting more than just the IP since this can easily be changed (often just by resetting the connection).

“I continuously mark his comments as spam”

    NO. Do not do this.
He is NOT a spammer. Just delete, do as rosclarke suggests but do not mark him as spammer.

Thanks for the advice, folks! Really appreciated.

    Hmmm…

Why shouldn’t we mark unwanted commenters as spam? I do that all the time.

BTW brownonbond – you can always go to the discussions settings and change things so that comments from commenters whom you’ve already approved once get posted immediately, but those that have never commented get stuck in a queue for your moderation. That’s the way I have it set up and it has saved a lot of crap from landing on my blog.

@Ian- Marking a comment as spam teaches Akismet to consider that user a spammer on every blog everywhere using Akismet. Just because a commenter is a jerk (or worse) on my blog doesn’t mean s/he is a spammer.

I let even the wackjobs’ comments stay but I do sometimes, but rarely, break a link they’ve left that I don’t want to be associated it.

Whackjobs are great for hits, but threats are illegal and should be brought to the attention of the police.

@ellaella – you’re right – an irksome commenter isn’t trying to sell me viagra, so technically they’re nto spammers, but shouldn’t we be thinking of the interests of other WP.com bloggers? I know how Askimet works, and that’s why I call them spam. By marking an obvious troll as spam, I might be saving others from having to deal with them. Is that really so bad?

lettershometoyou, I’m with you. Online psychos – and I’ve had my share, this being just one example; many have been far worse – http://ronsrants.wordpress.com/2008/09/05/the-unacceptable-face-of-blogging/ – are far worse than spammers in my view and, as well as a setting up keyword filters, I have them tagged as spam. If that causes them problems, it’s just too bad. Maybe they’ll learn a lesson.

True, but it’s still unsolicited and unwanted correspondence, and as such, I feel, falls under the broad heading of spam, with the same consequences for the sender – it’s consigned to oblivion and they’re labelled spammers. Really don’t have a problem with that.
