Reporting Plagarism

I’d like to report the blog http://ilovekoreans.wordpress.com/, the owner of which is cutting and pasting posts from my site and virtually every other blog that’s related to Korea. I realise that “Automattic” is there to report this to, but do I really need to write a long and detailed email when a 2 second glance at the site by anyone at WordPress.com reveals what the blogger is doing? I will if necessary of course, but it seems a tad excessive at 12:46 am for me here in Korea!

The following two posts on the blog are cuts and pastes from my own blog:

    http://ilovekoreans.wordpress.com/2008/04/17/why-lee-hyori%e2%80%99s-breasts-are-a-symbol-for-korean-celebrity-culture/
    http://ilovekoreans.wordpress.com/2008/04/17/korean-women-part-2-%e2%80%9cexercise%e2%80%9d-and-cosmetics/

Here are the originals from my blog:

Thanks in advance for any help!

I’m not WP staff, but the plagiarism is obvious. Copy & paste. That other blog should be shut down ASAP.

I think if you send support an email with the subject “DMCA Violation,” it will get priority treatment.

I am. Thanks for you reply, and also to the anonymous person who contacted me directly!

Just use the ‘Report as spam’ link at the right of yje admin bar.

Do not just say “they stole stuff”

Do say “They stole [url] from me and it is here on their blog [url].
    Details are always good.

OMG…this is making me scare…I hate spam from anonymous user, who is contacting you directly. However, copying somebody else work is cheating!!

P.S. Cheaters has no life and things to learn! They are lazy to write their own stuff!!

  • When you report plagiarism, it will speed up the process if you:

    1. Provide links to the individual posts on the plagiarist’s blog, and on your own blog, as Mark says above. Don’t just link to their blog, link to the post(s) in question.

    2. Clearly state that you are the author and copyright holder of that material and did not give permission for it to be republished.

Thanks for everyone’s help. Last night (here in Korea that is) I just used the “contact us” form at Automattic and mentioned everything that it requested for reporting violations of the DMCA.

Mark, I considered using “The Report as Spam” link, but then it wasn’t really spam in the traditional sense, so I was a bit confused and used Automattic instead.

Now the offending blogger is linking to my original posts as “sources”, which of course is better than before, but my posts are still just being copied and pasted. I’m surprised that WordPress.com didn’t simply delete the blog. The blogger was given a first warning perhaps?

If you’re not happy with the way your words are being used (and stealing whole posts without permission is BAD) then re-contact Support via the Spam button and insist. Believe me, I’ve seen many a blog kilt for that kind of thing.

I also wonder if this perp might be the same blogger who was asking in the forums “What happens when you ignore a DMCA notice.”

  • Unknown's avatar

Well…the only punishment is…get rid of the guys blog!
If the other users, who is trying to steal your quality work, then why don’t WordPress just hit the delete button???

P.S. If you’re students and writing your essay, this will effect your life!
Copying other user’s hard work without permission is against the law!
But, if youdo this in school…you will either get these; Expelled, diqualified from the exam…etc, or no points at all!

    End of Story.

WordPress usually DOES delete blogs like that. I’m wondering why it hasn’t happened in this case.

What kind of a loser tries to make a reputation by stealing someone else’s work? I hope somebody finds this weiner on Facebook and posts this thread to his page.

Note – posting here does NOT get results. Never will.

Send to Support, report as spam. One or the other.

    Actually:

    http://thegrandnarrative.wordpress.com has a CC license.
The ilovekoreans blog is – as far as I can tell – in compliance.

Thanks Mark. Everything is resolved to my satisfaction now.

Actually, when I originally started this thread, nothing was attributed. Presumably the change was the result of my reporting the blog to Automattic and them in turn warning the owner.

On a lighter note, I confess that I find the owner’s motivations inexplicable. If this was a slog then of course it would be for financial gain, but because ads are not allowed on a wordpress.com blog then I don’t understand at all. A 2 second glance at the blog reveals it to be nothing more than cut and pasted articles from other blogs. What’s the point?

Each to their own I suppose.

Before I forget, I’d like to recommend that WordPress.com add a new “Report Plagarism” (or something like that) button to their blue toolbar at the top of the page, or else change the name of the existing “Report as spam” one.

Like I said earlier, I would have contacted Support via that button originally had I known that that was the correct way to do so, but I was confused. I (naturally) thought that the button was only to report blogs that sent spam to me, not ones that were copying my posts!

  • Unknown's avatar

wow tats plagiarism at its max.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hang on, hang on. Mark made a very important point: did you actually choose the CC license that allows people to copy your work in its entirety? If so, then yes, that blog is in compliance. Everything we said about plagiarism applies only if you did not give permission. Choose your license very, very carefully.

  • Unknown's avatar

Raincoaster, yes, it appears that I did.

But like I said, when I first started the thread the blogger was not attributing the work at all, but only started doing so once I took action.
