How do I repost a previously posted piece?
Example, I posted X last year. But I want to post it again now. Is there a way to do this other than copying and pasting it?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

One option is to edit the post, and change the publication date to just republish it at the top of your blog feed. In other words, it will be the same post, but it will be moved up in the feed.

There are some problems with this, though: it won’t make the post reappear at the top in the Reader for people following it, it won’t send out a new email notification to email subscribers, and it won’t auto-share to social media via Publicize. Those things only happen the first time a post is published, not when the post is republished under a new timestamp.

Republishing a post like this also changes the permalink, so old links to the post might no longer work.

Another option is to create a new post, copying the old posts, content into it. However, this is bad for SEO – search engines don’t like it if they find the same content more than once on a site, so both the original post and the new copy will end up getting penalised in online search results.

I recommend something inbetween: Create a new post containing a short, original introduction, and a link back to the original post (perhaps with also a short extract of the original post, as a teaser). This will allow newer followers to your site to discover, and old followers to rediscover the post via their subscription notifications, while at the same time creating a backlink to the content, which is good for SEO.

So you get all the benefits you’re looking for in giving an old post some new life, without any of the drawbacks connected to the methods for simply re-posting.

I hope this makes sense, but let me know if you have any questions about this.
