When user visit my Homepage (Independent Publischer Theme) with a mobile phone they will see a directory tree with all subdirectories always expanded (see attached Screenshot „Sample-Independent-Publisher-Theme“).
For example other Themes show the directory tree but the subdirectories must be actively expand (siee attached Screenshot „Sample-Twenty-Twenty-One-Theme“

The site you have listed is using the Hever theme.
What is the URL of the site with the problem?

Hi there,
Thank you for clarifying the URL of the site. I see it is not hosted directly on WordPress.com, but uses our Independent Publisher 2 theme.

Because there is no “mouse” on mobile, and thus no way to “hover” over a dropdown menu, the mobile version of the menu automatically shows them, so the visitor can see all options.
If pages are hidden in a drop down menu on mobile, it can be harder for visitors to find those pages on your site.
There is not an option with the theme directly to collapse those subpages on mobile, but you may want to consider adding a mobile menus plugin to your site, which may offer that option: https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/mobile+menu/
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for the quick help. I tried the plugin you suggested but the appearance in the header has completely disappeared – see old view here and new plugin view here
I was under the assumption that the Theme might be modified for mobile smartphones. i like the Theme and would like to continue using it.

I contacted Raam Dev. He told me that the theme is a fork of his original theme made for WordPress.com and recommended me to post my question on the

Thanks Stefan,

I am sure it can be modified, or you can make a child theme that displays things as you’d like. I’m not sure what you have in mind, though:

I suspect my colleague is correct in that this is optimized for mobile; without a mouse it’s much more difficult to access any “hover” effects like you would get a on a desktop. Did you just want to offer a stripped-down menu for mobile?
If so, I am guessing the mobile menu plugin would need to be configured to include a separate mobile menu to your liking. I’ve not used their plugin, but they do have a support forum here:

We may have a problem of understandig.
I dont need a hover effect.
What I want is just a menu tree where the subdirectories are closed when you tip with your finger on the “menu” bar and only the first level directories (main directories) should open . A further finger-tip on the main-directory would open the subdirectories. -
Hello there,
Many thanks for thanks for that extra clarification.
What I want is just a menu tree where the subdirectories are closed when you tip with your finger on the “menu” bar and only the first level directories (main directories) should open . A further finger-tip on the main-directory would open the subdirectories.
To have this with this particular theme, would require some custom development, most likely on a child theme – mainly because this is not how this theme is designed.
In order to have such custom development, the site would need to be on the business plan.
Alternatively, you would need to look for a theme where the sub-menus behave as desired.
I hope this helps.
