Republishing old post

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’ve read that when we republish an old post (by changing the date) it doesn’t show up in the reader. Only by reblogging can we do this. The thing is, I’ve seen people I follow repost old blog posts of theirs that are not reblogs. They are the actual old post, I can tell because the comments are from a year or two years prior and the posts are not short excerpts like the way reblogs look. They are the full post changed to being published ‘just now.’ I’m wondering how this is possible and if so how to do this if I can. For instance I’d like to republish a post about how my blog began when I gain a big influx of new followers. If you could help clarify this, that would be great. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

Where did you read that? Changing the date of an old post will make it appear in the Reader again. We don’t prevent that. It won’t Publicize the post again, and the post might not appear in the tag listings again, but it will appear in the Reader streams of your followers.

That said, we don’t recommend that you do this. Changing the date of a published post, changes that post’s permalink, meaning all existing links where that post has been shared will no longer work. This also has a negative impact on how search engines like Google show you in search results.

And if you repeatedly edit a post’s date to keep it at the top of the Reader stream our system might flag you as a spammer, meaning your posts will no longer appear in tag listings, recommended posts or Reader searches.

If you want to get new eyes on an old post, rather use the Reader’s Share feature to publish a new post with a link back to the old one. That’s what that feature is there for. If you set the new post to the Link format, clicking on it’s title will also take people directly to the old post.
