Request clarification on the new 'monthly visits' limit

Firstly, thanks WordPress for the unannounced plan change that reduces storage levels by five-sixths and tell people they are over their limit.

Great touch and one I am sure will built the expected level of engagement with the platform.

Now, let’s talk about this other unannounced limit – monthly visits.

WordPress Free plans are now limited to 10,000 monthly visits. What does this mean and how is it handled?

My blog stats are currently measured by views and by visitors. I would appreciate it if you could clarify whether this 10,000 visits refers to views or visitors – or something else (please explain).

Secondly I would like to know what happens when a blog exceeds the 10,000 monthly visits.

Do you delete it? Do you turn it off for the remainder of the calendar month? SI the blog creator able to view and access it?

What happens to visit 10,001 forward? Do people trying to visit see an error page, or receive the impression the blog is no longer there? Something else?

Clarification would be welcome. As would an apology for the atrocious way you have rolled out these changes.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

thanks WordPress for the unannounced plan change that reduces storage levels by five-sixths and tell people they are over their limit.

As explained in the thread at https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/media-library-is-full-2/?view=all, this was an error, and it has already been fixed. If your site was created before 31 March, you still have the original 3GB upload limit available. Sorry for the confusion caused by this bug.

We’re also working on options to expand that storage should you ever reach that limit.

WordPress Free plans are now limited to 10,000 monthly visits. What does this mean and how is it handled?

At this point all that’s going to happen is that we’ll send you an email notifying that you’ve gone over the limit. We’re working on affordable add-on options for folks who regularly go over the limit that will allow you to increase it.

Could you please clarify what a ‘visit’ is for the purpose of this new ‘limit’?

At the moment stats are given to WP bloggers in both ‘visitors’ and ‘views’. Which if these is this new invented ‘limit’?

If it’s neither of the two existing stats, will this new measure appear in our stats so we can monitor it?

  • Could you please clarify what a ‘visit’ is for the purpose of this new ‘limit’?

At the moment I can’t tell you whether that will be based on pageviews or unique visitors – those details are still being worked out, along with the work on the add-ons that will allow you to increase this limit. Once those details are finalised they’ll be indicated either on the Pricing page, or on a dedicated support page.

I see you have a site that has steady traffic of over 10000 views a month, so I’d expect someone will also be in touch with you directly to discuss your options once we have those in place.

But I want to make it clear that this is a soft limit, and your site won’t be taken offline or blocked without warning because your views have gone over that limit.

Did anybody suggest that maybe you should figure out what something means BEFORE you announce it?

That’s an utterly appalling and completely unsatisfactory answer to a completely reasonable question about an already-published and “in place” policy.

  • Hey folks. We’re working to get this feedback sorted — would you mind sharing your thoughts here?
    https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/pricing-feedback/

We’ll be working through the comments there.

  • Also, I think I’ll go ahead and close this one for now. Having the details in one thread with a post we can update helps us locate and quantify the different requests so we can work on addressing them. I’m tagging this thread with feedback as well, but we’ll be posting any updates and responses here:

    Thanks in advance.
