Request: Link underline consistency

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently started properly using WordPress.com for a personal site/blog, and it’s been really great! I am genuinely grateful for a free service existing with such functionality, so thanks!

But there’s one thing that bugs me slightly, possibly due to being a bit old fashioned: link underline consistency.

Different blocks seem to have different rules. I’m using the Nook template but from browsing it looks similar for most templates.

    • Navigation links are never underlined
    • “Title” blocks are not underlined and then are on hover
    • General/all other links are underlined and then not underlined on hover

I’ve gotten around it to some degree by forcing my navigation links to always be underlined (somehow – I forget how I did it xD), and having a Read More link (which behaves like a general link thank goodness) wherever I’ve used the Title block. So at least there is always an underlined link wherever there is a link.

But, it’d be nice if any text which was a link just had the same behaviour. Personally I like all my links always underlined and a slightly lighter colour on hover, but I’d settle for always underlined and not on hover. I’d slightly less settle but still settle for any other combo as long as it was consistent.

I think the answer is gonna be pay for premium and edit the CSS, which is totally fair enough. But it’d be… kind I guess if that wasn’t necessary. xD

Ooor it might turn out I’ve missed something obvious and it’s completely solvable, which honestly would be great too lol.

Anyways, thanks for the great site/blog making system. Just some feedback from someone who’s been using it a lot this last week for a hobby!

*Edit: Read more links in fact are not underlined by default, but are on hover… except when they’re within an Excerpt block, THEN they act like normal links.

    Hi Scott,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and feedback! It’s great to hear you’re enjoying WordPress.com so far.

About the link underlines — I totally get where you’re coming from. It can feel a bit frustrating when links behave differently in different parts of your site. The way themes handle links (like navigation vs. titles vs. body text) isn’t something you can fully control on the free plan, unfortunately. That’s because making those style changes usually needs custom CSS, which is only available if you upgrade to the Business plan.

On the free plan, the best you can do is pick a theme that feels closest to what you want or manually add underlines to links inside your posts or pages. But I know that’s not the perfect solution.

    Keep enjoying your site-building journey!

    Best,
    Faisal

    Hi @scott1419,

I’m really glad to hear you’re enjoying the features and experience on WordPress.com—and I appreciate you taking a moment to share that with us!

I understand you’re trying to customize the underline style on your site built with the Nook theme. Since Nook is a block theme, you can adjust underline settings for each block globally using the Site Editor. You’ll also have the option to add custom CSS if you’d prefer more fine-tuned control.

Just a heads-up: to update block styles globally using the Site Editor or custom CSS features, your site will need to be on the Premium plan or higher.

To change underline styles using the Site Editor, you can follow these steps:
Go to your site dashboard → AppearanceEditorStylesBlocks.
From there, you can update the styling for specific blocks. I’m sharing a quick screencast here as a reference to walk you through it.

Alternatively, if you’re comfortable with CSS, you can add your own styles. Here’s a guide that walks you through how to add custom CSS: https://wordpress.com/support/editing-css/#tab-site-editor

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need a hand with anything else—I’m happy to guide you through it.

    Hi @faisalahammad,

It’s really great to see you taking the time to help other users—I truly appreciate that.

Just a quick heads-up: custom CSS is available starting from the Premium plan, so it’s not necessary to upgrade all the way to the Business plan. That means users on Premium, Business, or higher plans can use custom CSS features.

You can check the full plan comparison here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

And here’s a guide on adding custom CSS, which also confirms that CSS support is available starting from the Premium plan: https://wordpress.com/support/editing-css/

If anything’s unclear or you’d like to chat through it further, feel free to let me know—I’m happy to help clarify.

Or purchasing the annual CSS Add-on upgrade should also work, AFAIK. Plans give you a lot more features (more storage, able to upload more file types, access to more themes, etc.) but if all you need really is CSS access, then …
