Request plugin support for Open Attribute and more social networks

  • Unknown's avatar

I previously submitted a request asking for Open Attribute plugin support in WordPress.com to make it easier to add licensing and attribution information to blog posts. That plugin can be downloaded via http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/openattribute-for-wordpress/

I would also like to ask plugin compatibility be added for Google +1s, or better yet an AddThis plugin that will provide links to share with all the social networking sites. That way you don’t manually have to add Google +1s, Google Buzz, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Instapaper etc just 1 plugin that may provide all of that. The Add This browser plugin can be downloaded here http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/addthis/

By the way the WordPress plugin for Google +1 can be downloaded here http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-plus-one/

The reason for adding this is to make it easier to share WordPress content across a number of social networks. When there are more social networks than just Facebook and Twitter it would be nice to be able to have compatibility in WordPress for those social networks also.

  • Unfortunately, we cannot allow plugins on WordPress.com for security and stability reasons.

As for sharing buttons, check out Settings -> Sharing in your blog’s Dashboard.

Thanks for the quick reply. I understand WordPress.com users cannot add plugins from WordPress.org to their blogs for security reasons. Can WordPress.com then please add the functionality if possible themselves. WordPress.org also has plugins as noted for sharing buttons — to share content across social networks and as noted WordPress.com allows sharing buttons themselves using the Dashboard of user’s blogs.

After I posted this request I discovered WordPress.com has a feature to enable these sharing buttons. According to this page http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/ while WordPress.com does not allow users to add and install plugins it allows users to submit plugin requests to WordPress.com asking WordPress.com to add those plugins.

It reads “If there is a plugin that you feel is a must-have and would benefit users on WordPress.com, then please let us know using our contact form! Tell us what plugin you want, where it can be downloaded and most importantly, why you think it should be included on WordPress.com.” It also says the most numerous requests are often the ones that get implementation. Well I’d like to again request Open Attribute compatibility in WordPres.com and clarify that since users can’t install plugins if WordPress can add the functionality themselves asap. Thanks!

Update: For more information on OpenAttribute visit http://openattribute.com they have a WordPress plugin on WordPress.org, and browser plugins for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera.

As to why WordPress.com should add Open Attribute:

give credit where credit is due.
The problem: Creative Commons licensed content is awesome, but attributing it properly can be difficult and confusing. The first rule for re-using openly licensed content is that you have to properly attribute the creator. There are specific requirements for what needs to go into that attribution, but those requirements can be confusing and hard to find.
The solution: A simple tool everyone can use to do the right thing with the click of a button. That’s why Open Attribute has been created which is a suite of tools hat makes it ridiculously simple for anyone to copy and paste the correct attribution for any CC licensed work. These tools will query the metadata around a CC-licensed object and produce a properly formatted attribution that users can copy and paste wherever they need to. Open Attribute was started as a Mozilla Drumbeat project.

Just wanted to share a site talking about Open Attribute for WordPress that is using Open Attribute plugin so WordPress.com can better understand and see what OpenAttribute is and does. http://mollykleinman.com/2011/04/26/open-attribute-now-in-wordpress/

I hope WordPress.com will consider adding Open Attribute support to the site in future. Thanks again.

  • We do accept plugin requests, but we don’t actually add the plugins, we take them under advisement for future features, which we have done with this.

    Thanks for the info!

Oh okay. Then I would like to request WordPress.com support please consider adding Open Attribute as a future feature of WordPress.com. The website I mentioned is using the WordPress.org Open Attribute plugin. On my WordPress blog though at http://www.maneeshpangasa.wordpress.com I am not yet able to add Open Attribute. If the feature is already there in WordPress.com I request instructions on how to access it be provided. If its not yet on WordPress.com which I assume to be the case as I haven’t found it there yet I’d ask WordPress to add it as you’ve stated in future under advisement as a future feature.

You mentioned “We do accept plugin requests, but we don’t actually add the plugins, we take them under advisement for future features, which we have done with this.” which would lead me to assume the feature is already available on WordPress.com but can’t find it there. Has it been added to WordPress.com? If it has again how can I add it? I suspect the site I mentioned is using the actual WordPress.org plugin (can you clarify what you meant by which we have done with this — does that mean you have enabled this feature in WordPress.com?) thanks again for the further clarification and hope to be able to use Open Attribute with WordPress.com soon.

Also I noticed when accessing my blog on an iPad it does not show Google +1 share button but on a computer it appears. When in my Dashboard’s Settings, Sharing page there are 2 options in Sharing settings — a section titled Publicize where I can connect my WordPress account with my Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn Yahoo and or Windows Messenger Connect service — it says connect your blog with popular social networking sites and automatically share posts with your friends. Under Publicize I’d like to see Google+ added if possible.

Then there is another section Share button — Add a share button to your blog and allow your visitors to share posts with friends. In Share button settings there are 3 sections Available services where I can drag buttons for Facebook, Twitter, Google+ (i.e. +1 button), WordPress’s Press This button, a LinkedIn button, buttons for Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Email, Print.

Under Enabled Services I’ve added Google+, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Press This. In the Live Preview section of the share button settings it shows all the buttons I have enabled. It also shows the Twitter and Facebook button having drop down menu(s) from which I can change the settings for the buttons. For example the Twitter button when I choose the drop down menu provides an option to enable/disable use of Twitter’s smart button. On the drop-down menu for the Facebook button are settings to toggle between Facebook like button, default button or share button.

LinkedIn button also has drop down menu in settings similar to Twitter’s with feature to turn on/off smart button feature of LinkedIn. Only the Google+ button in sharing settings does not have drop down menu with such functionality. When I visit my blog on my computer the Google+ button which enables users to +1 stuff appears in my blog but on iPad it doesn’t show Google+ sharing button.

Why can’t the Google +1 button show up when viewing on an iPad? Please tweak the functionality of the Google+ sharing button for sharing +1s to be viewed from iPads and tablet computers. Now the Press This button only appears on my blog when signed in to WordPress.com to manage my blog whether on a computer or an iPad. However, I understand the reasoning for that is because its for bloggers when signed in to make it easier to make new posts. Press This after all allows quick publishing.

However, why is my +1 button invisible on my blog when viewed on an iPad whether signed in or out of my WordPress.com account?

  • No, it’s not yet available, that’s why you can’t find it. We’re taking it under consideration.

The Google has not yet offered a “smart” vs “plain” style for the button yet. Technically, the only style they offer is the “smart” style with incremental numbers.

Similarly, Google has not offered an API to post to Google Plus and their developers have stated multiple times that such a thing may never exist as they don’t want to see the platform become nothing but a re-blogger.

The appearance of a Google + button on iPad is definitely lacking. We’re working on improving the sharing buttons themselves, so I’ll let the team know.

Alright thanks for the clarification and quick response. Well will hope to see the Open Attribute feature added in future (as you mentioned its being taken under advisement) and hopefully see the sharing buttons improved so Google’s +1 button can be seen on WordPress blogs on an iPad.
